Trump appears unwilling to go down in history as the president responsible for kicking off nuclear Armageddon. But the deep state in control of US politics would surely be able to place into office someone who would advance the final justification for a headlong confrontation with Moscow and Beijing.
The baffling non-answers from the senior administration officials strongly suggest that the president’s impulse for a grand U.S.-Chinese-Russian arms control bargain is not backed up with a realistic plan.
If Trump is not ready or able to take the steps necessary to prevent a dangerous new U.S.-Russian nuclear arms race, Congress should be ready to do so.
There are no options but for Russia and the US to put their differences aside and concentrate on ways to save arms control or whatever is left of it.
