West Responds to Islamic State Gains and Successes

No matter the United States and Great Britain claim to form a coalition of 40 states to fight the Islamic State, there is little done in practice. The United Sates are pursuing the very same goals as in the past: to overthrow Bashar Assad in Syria, make forces hostile to Tehran and Damascus come to power in Iraq, weaken Iran and Shia Hezbollah movement on Lebanon and then move jihad closer to the Russian borders. Washington hopes that the Ukraine’s crisis will divert Moscow efforts and limit its influence in the Middle East.

The Looming American Quagmire in Iraq and Syria
September 19, 2014

As the Barack Obama administration seeks reliable allies to confront the Islamic State of Syria and the Levant (ISIL) the United States is on the precipice of falling into another Middle Eastern quagmire. In the internecine battles in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and probably soon in Jordan and the Sinai peninsula of Egypt, shifting loyalties, deep-pocketed Gulf Arabs, and an increasingly close relationship between Israel’s right-wing Zionists and the House of Saud, provide all the ingredients for a quagmire. The Iran’s views on what is happening in Iraq largely coincide with the Russia’s position.  Iran accused the United States on Saturday of seeking to "topple the legitimate regime" of Bashar al-Assad in Syria under the pretext of fighting against Islamic State (IS) militants. The speaker of parliament, Ali Larijani, warned the United States against launching strikes against Iran's ally Syria. "The United States is playing with fire in the region and must know that it cannot attack Syria on the pretext of fighting against the Islamic State," he said. The secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani emphasized that Washington was "trying to divert the eyes of the world from its pivotal role in supporting and equipping the terrorists in Syria in a bid to topple the legitimate regime." "On the pretext of fighting terrorism, the United States want to pursue their unilateral policies and violate the sovereignty of states," Shamkhani said.
