What Trump overlooked in his presentation was the reality that the liberation of Europe began long before the D-Day landings. And the burden had almost exclusively been born by the Soviets.
It would be good if both sides calmed down and stopped claiming either that D-Day won the war or that it was a very minor offstage event. But that’s probably too much to hope for today.
Stealing the laurels of victory was a necessary act of treachery by the Western powers in order to facilitate their Cold War against the Soviet Union. The same treachery continues today as Washington and its NATO allies try to wage a new Cold War against Russia.
An acknowledgement of the leading Soviet role in the victory of 1945 would serve as a reminder of how much the USA and the USSR were able to accomplish together in their joint triumph over fascism.
