«Zapad-2017» is a joint strategic military exercise of Russia and Belarus scheduled for September 14-20, 2017. NATO, the United Nations, the OSCE and other countries have been invited to send their observers. In compliance with provisions of the Vienna Document, Russia presented detailed information about the exercise on July, 13. A special briefing is planned for the OSCE. Before the exercise starts there will be an extended briefing held in Moscow. NATO officials want Russia to abide by the Vienna Document. That is exactly what Moscow and Minsk are doing. But…the alliance believes that problems remain.

Poland's opposition Law & Justice Party (LJP) held its congress in Katowice on July 3-6, 2015. Michał Dworczyk, the head of Freedom and Democracy Foundation established to support Poles in former USSR, and former adviser to late President Lech Kaczyński, outlined the guidelines of Poland’s eastern policy. He emphasized the need to reject the policy of “historical amnesia” when Poland turns a blind eye on the Kiev’s heroization of Nazi OUN-UPA (the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists- Ukrainian Insurgent Army) criminals. He also stressed the need to strengthen ties with the countries of so-called Intermarium. The plight of Poles in Lithuania and Belarus will be in focus of the foreign policy efforts under the President-elect Andrzej Duda who won the presidential election as the LJP candidate (he was present at the congress)…

As the new year started, the Eurasian Economic Union (the EEU) signed on May 29, 2014 came into force to include Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kirgizia. The EEU boasts the population of 183 million (the seventh largest in the world) and covers over 20 million square kilometers (15% of the earth’s land). The organization is the largest world gas (22% of global output) and oil (14, 6% of global output) producer, the second largest producer of mineral fertilizers (14% of world output), the third largest energy (9% of global output) producer and the fourth largest producer of steel (6% of global production) and coal (6% of global output)… (1) But what really matters is that the Eurasian Union is «a model of a powerful, supranational association capable of becoming one of the poles of the modern world… to play an effective bridge role between Europe and the dynamic Asia-Pacific region»…
