The Candy King Comes to Washington

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s trip to Washington, DC will follow those of a number of shameless pandering foreign leaders who held their hands out for American cashy, military assistance, and propaganda support. Like next month’s Halloween “Trick or Treat” tradition that witnesses children going door-to-door begging for candy treats, chocolate tycoon Poroshenko will be begging Washington’s political leaders for hundreds of millions of dollars or more in aid without even offering a chocolate bar in return.

Poroshenko is certain to receive a “hero’s welcome” by the interventionist and neo-conservative elements of the U.S. Congress, the Obama administration, and the media, as well as their neo-con counterparts in Canada. In fact, Poroshenko has been invited to address a joint session of Congress, an honor bestowed only to America’s most pandering and pandered to allies, especially Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu who has spoken twice to joint sessions. Netanyahu only comes to Washington when he expects to return to Jerusalem with huge financial guarantees, military aid packages, and other largesse courtesy of the American taxpayers. Poroshenko and other leaders know this and try to emulate the influence of the Israel Lobby that ensures huge assistance packages for their client.

The speech to the joint session of Congress will place Poroshenko on the same level as other present and past U.S. allies, including South Korean President Park Geun-hye, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Czech President Vaclav Havel, and the Shah of Iran.

However, Poroshenko’s speech will become forgotten as soon at it is given. Today, few, if any, older members of Congress would recall similar addresses by NATO allies such as Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, Dutch Queen Beatrix, or Canadian Governor General Vincent Massey. All those speeches became, as will Poroshenko’s, insignificant footnotes of history.

U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, is typical Washington phraseology designed to curry favor with Ukrainian-American voters in Cleveland and Toledo in his state of Ohio, stated, “Having President Poroshenko address Congress is another signal of our steadfast commitment to the aspirations of his people.” The press statements of Boehner and other elected representatives are standard fare for such occasions and mirror the sycophantic statements made by members of Congress in 2005 when Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, the godfather of Poroshenko’s children, addressed a joint session of Congress.

Poroshenko will also be hosted by President Barack Obama at a meeting at the White House. Obama will praise Petroshenko for signing the recent “Association Agreement” with the European Union and hype the Rapid Trident 2014 military exercises being conducted in Ukraine by Ukrainian and NATO forces and the Sea Breeze naval exercises recently completed with the U.S. Navy in the Black Sea. Ukrainian Defense Minister Defense Minister Valerey Heletey recently announced that NATO countries are delivering weapons to Ukraine for use against the Russian-speaking population of eastern Ukraine. NATO’s armament of Kiev comes as the Ukrainian legislature (Rada) passed a law guaranteeing limited autonomy for eastern Ukraine to maintain its own policing forces, develop its own relations with Russia, and guarantee Russian language rights. There are no guarantees that NATO weapons will not end up in the hands of neo-Nazi Ukrainian militias sporting Nazi helmets and who have entered eastern Ukraine with genocide in their foremost thoughts.

Obama will use the White House meeting to threaten even more sanctions against Russia, even as a shaky cease fire, worked out after negotiations in Minsk, struggles to survive the rhetoric emanating from the shamelessly pro-U.S. and reported Scientologist Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, known as “Yats” to his chief Obama administration mentor, Assistant Secretary of State for European/Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland. Nuland, the wife of arch-neocon and pro-Israeli policy wonk Robert Kagan, can be sure to line up Washington’s Israel Lobby in the Congress and media, to hype Poroshenko as a “savior of Ukraine” while, at the same time, heaping scorn on Russia.

The same series of events will take place in Ottawa, where Poroshenko will address a joint session of Parliament amid support from Tory Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Russophobe Cabinet ministers, particularly Foreign Minister John “Rusty” Baird, who is reportedly more often at ease with 18’ish young lads as he is with seasoned Parliament Hill politicians and foreign dignitaries.

As the political leader of one of NATO’s aspirant members, Poroshenko will discover in Washington that NATO leaders have no more influence over Washington’s military, diplomatic, financial, and intelligence apparatus as a low-level British colonial governor of some far-flung colony of the British Empire had with the Colonial Office in London. The political leaders of NATO member states come and go in Washington. After President and Mrs. Poroshenko are treated to various diplomatic niceties, including the standard shopping trip at Washington’s most expensive boutiques and department stores for Ukraine’s First Lady while her husband engages in talks with government leaders, Poroshenko will further commit his nation to never-ending dictates from NATO headquarters in Brussels, the Pentagon, the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and the Eurocrats of Brussels. The Faustian deal for every new and prospective NATO member is that they will be forced to integrate their military forces with NATO, which means windfall profits for Lockheed-Martin, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, and other Western military contractors eager to replace older weapons platforms, including aircraft, with “standardized” NATO hardware.

Poroshenko will also be feted by a number of Ukrainian-American and Ukrainian-Canadian organizations that have historically backed the most reactionary and fascist-aligned elements in Ukraine. In the United States, these right-wing Ukrainian diaspora communities are concentrated in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, northern Illinois, and California. These Ukrainian groups, which include the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee and the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, have donated bulletproof vests, night-vision goggles, helmets, and boots to the Ukrainian military and national guard/militia forces without interference from U.S. defense export authorities.

Poroshenko will leave North America for Ukraine after having signing Ukraine to become a NATO and U.S. military and economic client state. Europe is replete with countries that joined NATO and the EU only to find themselves being pressured to increase their defense spending to help engage in foolhardy saber rattling represented by new “missile defense” and other weapons systems aimed at countries like Russia and Iran, as well as subjugate their economies to draconian austerity measures demanded by global bankers in Frankfurt, London, and New York.
