The President Obama’s words about US exceptionalism appeared to sound sincerely. This national narcissism is something already seen before, but the America’s open and myope haughtiness make one pose and ponder. Did President Obama speak on behalf of American nation? Is the nation consolidated enough to speak before the world with one voice? Does the black skinned President have a right to say for all US citizens «We, America»?
With over 300 million of total population Anglo-Saxons account for 24, 5 million or 8%, but they dominate the state power structures. The descendants of Anglo-Saxon settlers, they predominantly occupy the key positions in all spheres of public life. Formally they have no privileges, it’s not on the surface, but the fact remains in effect – they are the ones who call the shots. English Americans are the majority in Congress, federal and local power structures, state departments, in the military and civilian state bodies. Jews enjoy privileged position in American society. They are the financial elite of the US and considered to be equal to the descendants of first European English speaking settlers. This group enjoys high living standards, it remains faithful to the traditions of «Wild West» and is predominantly conservative, and it’s true that many of those who belong to it believe in their Exceptionalism. The group harbors «private clubs» that determine the policies of the United States.
If President Obama meant this group of chosen, than there is a little inconsistency. Anglo-Saxons don’t jeopardize themselves and their well-being for the freedom of others. A descendant of first white settlers is something uncommon in the US military; the ranks of the armed forces are mainly filled with those who come from poor families and ready to shed their blood for money.
It looks like American Germans, the leading white citizens group, should side with Obama. It numbers around 50 million. They have no special reasons to proud of their place in the US history. Dwight Eisenhower, the WWII hero, was the only German American President. This numerous part of US population is predominantly made up by «average Americans».
Perhaps the US President spoke in the name of around 38 million of Afro-Americans that have failed to integrate into the «prosperous America»? Do those who belong to the same ethnic group as the President feel missionaries of «Her Majesty Freedom» in the undiscovered lands? Frankly, they don’t even know such words being an unprivileged group back home. It’s a rare case they find themselves part of state or business structures, the percentage of illiteracy and unemployment is great, criminal rate and drug trafficking is on the rise among them. They occupy a lower place on the social ladder leaving Anglo-Saxons at the top. They hardly have a reason to say they are better than others.
May be Obama will get support from 42 million Hispanics? They appear to find a better life than the one they left back home in Mexico, Puerto-Rico or Ecuador? It’s hard to believe. A major part of them don’t even speak English divided into small diasporas living in line with their own internal laws. No doubt their living standards lag behind in comparison with Native Americans. They hardly have anything to do with the US President and the US exceptionalism that he sets forth.
It’s hard to imagine that 12 million of China town dwellers, 3,5 million Arabs, and new hopefuls for green card from Europe and Asia have anything to do with the exceptionalism concept. They look at the American society from the position of low start and there is an enormous gap between them and Native Americans.
Millions of settlers have come from Europe and Asia as a result of postwar migration, including Russian, Ukrainians, Greek, Italians, Koreans and Japanese. They have had different fates but still fell themselves «new Americans». But they are kept at the great distance from those who belong to mason lodges and private clubs of Native Americans. Even if they have hit it big in business or science.
No way can one find «one America» in the United States. There is no such country. There is a conglomerate of nationalities divided by social and economic differences and ruled by the caste of Anglo-Saxon «priests of democracy» with black president Obama on their service.
The US government shut down makes one ponder about the exceptionalism again. 800 million are facing unpaid furloughs. The government is a big employer, so about 3 million state workers are going to be affected with corresponding influence on the country’s life.
The shut down is the result of bickering between opposing political groups that demonstrate that getting even is more important for them than the interests of common people. Some US politicians may say the situation speaks for existence of real democracy in the country. But this makes see that the US type of democracy envisions the solution of multiple problems at the expense of the major part of working people. That’s the gist of it.
There are many examples to support it. For instance – the coercive expropriation of gold from people in the days of Great Depression. The depression reached its peak in the spring of 1933 when Roosevelt issued an executive order to collect gold from people in a month and make it be kept in the storages of Federal Reserve System, which is, as is known, not a state but rather a private structure.
Roosevelt said the confiscation was needed to get America out of depression. It was implemented. If you compare it with the 800 million furloughed, it starts to look like a minor matter.
It not the first time the «exceptional America» solves the problems at the expense of ordinary people turning a blind eye on what they say or feel. This is the democracy President Obama is proud of. In theory a real democratic solution is possible: Republican congressmen refuse to get their pay together with the state workers till a compromise is reached. That what real advocates for justice do by going on a hunger strike. The congressmen get their wages from state, if they don’t like the budget – that’s the way to express their protest. Such a gesture would get the support of common Americans.
But no. The «fighters for ideas» preferred to let he situation slide to the state shut down while preserving their incomes. That is the US democracy in plain view.
If Obama decides to speak about the exceptionalism he would have to explain what he means and to make precise what is at the core of it – the exceptional rights of the country’s rulers. All other things are just shooting the breeze, the ritual incantations of American «democracy priests» to convince the gullible and uninformed.
