Pakistan and Decisive Storm in Yemen

Looks like Islamabad tries to dodge taking an active part in the military operation against Yemen. Pakistani Prime Minister Navaz Sharif owes Saudi Arabia. It saved his life and let his clan prosper. Thanks to kingdom’s interference he was exiled from the country instead of facing the death sentence handed down by the country’s Supreme Court in 2001. Sharif was sheltered by Saudi Arabia after the coup that overthrew him in 1999. The benevolent attitude of kingdom’s ruling circles contributed to success of his family business. Now Riyadh is irritated by the fact that personal close relationship with the Prime Minister does not guarantee Pakistan’s participation in the operation against Yemen...

Will «Big Six» Lose Historic Opportunity to Close Iran’s Nuclear Dossier?

The next round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program is scheduled on March 26 - the day US State Secretary John Kerry is to meet his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif in Lausanne, Switzerland. The chances for reaching an agreement till the end of March are bleak... On March 23, 367 House lawmakers signed an open letter to President Barack Obama warning him that any nuclear deal with Tehran will effectively require congressional approval for implementation to prevent any chance of going nuclear... America wants the regional influence of Iran weakened. Actually, that’s what Americans have been doing since the revolution in Iran took place 36 years ago. Israel and Saudi Arabia remain to be the leading regional allies of United States. They represent the main forces opposing the agreement between P5+1 and Tehran. With sanctions lifted and international isolation ended, Iran becomes a regional superpower...

Obama’s Iran Policy Close to Failure

The next round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program is scheduled on March 15-20 with final agreement to be reached till March 24. This is a very dubious prospect... French President Francois Hollande openly says France does not approve the unilateral concessions that, to his mind, Washington is ready to make. According to Hollande, the number of centrifuges to be used by Iran for uranium enrichment under the US version of the agreement is «unacceptable»... The ten-year long effort may end up in deadlock...

Netanyahu Attacks Iran in US Congress: Deceitful Show

…Before getting on the plane for Washington, Mr. Netanyahu described his trip as a «fateful and even historic mission». According to him, his dramatic address to the U.S. Congress at what he said was a «fateful» crossroads of history». In his first address to Congress in 1996, he warned that an atomic Iran would «presage catastrophic consequences, not only for my country, and not only for the Middle East, but for all mankind». Little has changed since those days.

Geneva-2: Look from Tehran

As is known, the United States’ policy on Iranian nuclear program has come under harsh criticism on the part of Saudi Arabia and Israel. It was harsh enough to make John Kerry say on NBC's «Meet the Press», «We are not blind, and I don't think we're stupid. I think we have a pretty strong sense of how to measure whether or not we are acting in the interests of our country and of the globe». Kerry assures that the most serious, capable and competent people in the US government with great experience of dealing with Iran tackle the nuclear program issue. Is it so? By the end of the summer in 2013 the US experts on Iran pushed the United States to the brink of unleashing a perilous military adventure against Syria...

Geneva-2: Keeping Iran Away Matches US - Saudi Interests

An international peace conference for Syria will begin on January 22... There are great doubts the conference will succeed without Iran taking part or its support for the crisis management process after the conference is over... Today the global terrorist network is being reshaped. A great number of new, independent groups appear. Many of them get funds from the monarchies of the Persian Gulf. In the case of the United States of America and NATO it brings up the issue of revising the relationship with their traditional allies in the Middle East. It’s not about choosing between Iran and Saudi Arabia, but rather between terror and diplomacy or war and peace.

Why PACE has turned its gaze toward post-Soviet conflicts

As has been reported, last April the Monitoring Committee met during the spring session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.  A special subcommittee was created at that meeting - the Ad hoc Sub-Committee on Conflicts between Member States of the Council of Europe.  This new entity, which will be directly responsible for looking into so-called «frozen conflicts» in the former Soviet Union, should have official status and begin its work in June.  It met for the first time in Paris on May 27...
