Where Europe Heads to? Harbingers of Political Storm

The daily routine has distracted the attention of ruling circles in Europe. They have failed to see in time the erosion of political order due to growing interference of EU supranational structures into the affairs of national states. The first warning was sounded during the May 2014 European Parliament election. Miscellaneous and sundry political parties united in their anti-EU drive received 30% of the votes. The Treaty of Lisbon was concluded in 2007 to replace the failed EU Constitutional Treaty. Since then it has become clear that the European integration is quite a reversible process...

A Game of Scottish Solitaire for Europe (II)

...Various anti-crisis programs are being prepared in different parts of Europe. Until now the leaders of the Veneto self-determination movement have been sounding conciliatory enough. They wish to retain the euro while others call for leaving the eurozone and go back to national currencies. Marin Le Pen, the head of French National Front, is convinced that her country has to return the national currency, something possessed by 95% of the countries in the world as the circulation of euro makes thousands of enterprises go bankrupt... The economic problems faced by the European Union and the growth of separatist trends in Europe are two sides of the same coin.

A Game of Scotch Solitaire for Europe (I)

«Whenever you fall, pick something up» advises a Scottish proverb. That’s a fairly good description of the current state of separatist movements in Europe. Various nooks and crannies of the Old World eagerly followed September’s referendum on self-determination in Scotland. Now many are trying to absorb and apply the methods used by Scottish separatists in order to advance their own interests - just like the Scots, themselves, post-referendum. The deepest reverberations from the events in Scotland were felt in Catalonia where new political skirmishes are rocking a nation already beset by a severe socio-economic crisis...

Thousands across Europe rally against EU policies (VIDEO)

Thousands of activists took to the streets of Germany and Spain on Saturday to protest the EU’s policies as the union prepares for parliamentary elections at the end of May. In Germany, the EU's powerhouse, people participated in a day of anti-Brussels protests in Hamburg and the capital Berlin.

The Resurgence of European Separatism

A 1.5-million-person demonstration in Barcelona in support of Catalonian independence and the fact that the Catalonian parliament is controlled by two separatist parties are the most noticeable signs of the new blossoming of separatism in Europe. Earlier, in October 2012, British Prime Minister Cameron and First Minister of Scotland Salmond signed an agreement on the holding of a referendum in 2014 on the independence of this part of the United Kingdom. At the same time, the Flemish separatists from the New Flemish Alliance won the local elections in Belgium. Nationalists have also come to power in the Basque Country in Spain. The examples cited are only the tip of the enormous separatist iceberg of Europe...

US Marine Corps Reshapes to Meet Contingencies

The Marine Corps is developing new units across the globe as it shifts from fighting in Afghanistan to responding to a variety of crises and hostilities in other regions of the globe. The United States has asked Spain for permission to expand its 500-strong Marine rapid-reaction force for Africa by at least 50 percent and extend its presence at the Morón de la Frontera base by one more year, Spanish government sources said... In total 1,100 marines plus their families will be installed in the Cádiz base. The main part of the mission is to patrol the Eastern Mediterranean and to intercept, with the help of radars in Turkey and Poland, a hypothetical attack from countries like Iran...

On the Fronts of the European Crisis

A group of well-known European and American economists have concluded that the euro currency itself is to blame for the problems in the eurozone. The report published recently by these economists, who joined forces in Massachusetts under the guise of the National Bureau of Economic Research, is the first at such a high expert level to pass sentence on the single European currency...

Europe: Time for a Reappraisal of Values

Without any exaggeration, the events that have unfolded in the countries of the European Union following the global economic crisis can be called a humanitarian catastrophe. Not according to economic indicators, which remain high. The catastrophe for people living in the EU has been the collapse of the world they are used to, the destruction of a seemingly natural social partnership between state and society, society and capital. The scale of the decline in Europe's social standards is really quite impressive...

The European Union and Russia: Old Faces, New Trends

...The upcoming general elections in Italy on 24-25 February may see the removal of the current rightwing coalition headed by Premier Mario Monti, who carried out the anti-crisis policy in line with recommendations from Brussels... In recent days, there have been many indications that the leadership of the European Union and the leaders of its member states, primarily Germany, are trying to interfere directly in the Italian election campaign in order to ensure victory for Mario Monti, regarded by Brussels as a manageable candidate...

Crisis An Instrument in Building the Euroempire

...If another austerity package is adopted, the country would fall apart and downtown Madrid would be left alone to repay the sovereign debt... The carefully engineered and fueled debt crisis, coupled to Brussels' regionalization policies, not only causes nation-statehoods in Europe to crumble but, from a wider perspective, undermines national sovereignty and statehood as general principles.
