Manmohan Singh’s Foreign Policy Legacy

With the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, which ended last Sunday, the curtain is coming down on Part II of the Manmohan Singh era (2009-2014) in India’s foreign policy... There can be no two opinions that Manmohan Singh has been an unabashedly «pro-American» prime minister who chose to view Indian foreign-policy directions at any given time on any conceivable issue paramountly through the prism of the country’s relations with the United States... Today the Manmohan Singh government has entered the «lame duck» period. An era is ending in Indian politics and another is struggling to be born...

Karzai Brings a Riddle to Delhi

...Delhi watches with deep concern the floundering peace track and the centrality that Pakistan has managed to secure in the Obama administration’s Afghan strategy. The Indian security analysts apprehend a Taliban «surge» on the Afghan chessboard taking advantage of the security vacuum resulting from the withdrawal of the NATO troops...

Bad omens haunt Indian politics

On Tuesday before the crack of dawn, a passenger train rammed into a stationary freight train for reasons that still remain obscure, killing 25 passengers in their sleep, 16 of them charred to death. As dawn broke, the national airline Air India entered the 15th day of its shutdown with the pilots refusing to fly the aircraft. The day mutely witnessed the Indian Rupee falling at a frantic pace to its lowest-ever depth in history, which prompted Reuters to raise the specter of a Greek-style crisis in the economy...

India-Russia Partnership: Continuity in the Midst of Change

On the issue of Afghanistan, Manmohan Singh argued that in a post-NATO Afghanistan, India and Russia have to play crucial roles to maintain peace and stability in the region... During the summit, India placed an order for 42 Sukhoi-MKI 30 jets... Singh observed, the two sides have concluded negotiations and agreed on the terms and conditions for the Russian credit for Units 3 and 4 of the Kudan Kulam nuclear power project. Both the countries also concluded negotiations with regard to Glonass satellite system being put into orbit by Moscow as an alternative to the West-controlled GPS system...

The Islamic State – America’s Double-Edged Sword

Serious experts are now in little doubt that the US administration was the ‘midwife’ of the Islamic State (IS). Renowned Israeli analyst and former head of the ultra-secretive intelligence agency Nativ, Jacob Kedmi, says that the US is now trying to use the tactic of setting moderate Islam against radical Islam, which was «successfully employed in Russia». It is not turning out well for the US, however, considering that for the last three years the Americans have acted as allies of the IS in Syria, and before that were allies of al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan... The war currently being carried out against the IS by the US Air Force is recognised to be for show and is more reminiscent of an arrangement of red flags, beyond which it is inadvisable to go...
