Russia’s Defence Minister Touring Caribbean Triangle

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu went on a Latin American tour on February 11-14 taking him to Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba - the countries that maintain stable allied relations with Russia in the field of military cooperation. An agreement on conducting joint military exercises was signed in Venezuela. Russia and Nicaragua signed an intergovernmental agreement on a simplified procedure of Russian Navy warships’ visits to the ports of Nicaragua. An agreement on development of military-technical cooperation was concluded during the visit to Cuba...

Russia-Iran Military Cooperation Agreement – Step Ahead to Strategic Cooperation

Russia and Iran have signed a military agreement. This is the first time an inter-governmental military cooperation agreement has been concluded in the centuries-old history of bilateral relations... It’s the first and only military cooperation agreement concluded by Iran with another country. It’s much more important for Iran than the implementation of the obsolete S-300 contract, something the US is concerned about so much. The US has not learned the lesson that Russia taught it by developing military ties with Egypt.

‘Secret’ military bases in the Western Hemisphere

In November 2013, the National Assembly of Nicaragua ratified the government’s decision allowing Russian military units, ships and aircraft to visit the republic in the first half of 2014. Their crews have also been given permission to take part in the professional training of Nicaraguan military personnel and to share with them their expertise... Russia’s Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu recently announced plans to increase the number of bases abroad. He also mentioned that talks were being held with Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Singapore and the Seychelles...

Arctic: New Economic and Security Hot Spot (II)

...During a meeting with Moscow State University students in Moscow on December 3, Putin was asked whether Russia and other countries might loosen their grip on Arctic territory for military exercises and exploitation of natural resources in favor of environmental preservation. The Russian leader replied that the United States hasn't slipped off the ice shelf and implied that his country's national defense priorities will continue to outweigh conservation efforts. «Experts know quite well that it takes U.S. missiles 15 to 16 minutes to reach Moscow from the Barents Sea», Putin said...

Russian Ministers Pay Landmark Visit to Egypt

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived in Cairo on November 13 for a two-day visit to hold separate talks, as well as meeting in the format of ‘2 plus 2» with acting president of Egypt Adli Mansour, Egypt's interim Defense Minister Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, Egypt's interim Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy and other officials... It is expected President Putin will pay a visit to Egypt, perhaps as early as in late November... During the Nasser’s rule the Russia-Egypt relationship saw its best days. The «2+2» visit gives ground to believe those days may come back for the benefit of both countries...

First Month of War in Yemen

...Saudi Arabia cannot defeat the Houthis without having boots on the ground. The Saudi allies are not chomping at the bit for deploying ground forces in Yemen. Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates have no capability to conduct large-scale ground operations. A couple of battalions would not be enough. The first month of war in Yemen showed that these states have no wish to get further embroiled in the Yemeni conflict under the banner of Saudi Kingdom. Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan continue to watch the situation creep. They are in no rush to start a direct confrontation with Iran.
