«Eurointegration Is a Myth»...

In recent days Bucharest has taken a course toward aggravating the situation in the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic. Romanian President Traian Basescu attacked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his words that Transnistrians «should be allowed to decide their own fate»... A catalyst for the pumping up of nationalist hysteria in Romania is the precipitous collapse of statehood in neighboring Ukraine, which raises the question of the fate of the Romanians living on the territory of Ukrainian Bukovina...

EU: Сolossus with Feet of Clay

Ten years ago, on March 29, 2004, the EU took a hasty decision on enlargement adding simultaneously ten more new members: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Cyprus and Malta. As a result, the European Union became an all-European organization instead of being an economic community. It gave rise to new problems and contradictions... The Ukraine’s becoming a failed state is a result of the EU’s policy of expansion further into Eurasia with the help of Eastern Partnership program...

Ukrainian Maidans: Separatist Trends as Hidden Motive

...Aside from internal factors that foster the process of the Ukraine’s balkanization, there are important aspects influencing the situation form outside... Budapest cherishes the dreams of «Greater Hungary». It fully supports the «Kiev westerners» eyeing the potentially Hungarian lands of Transcarpatia (Zakarpattia Oblast) dominated by Hungarian population... Warsaw has the ambitions of its own which to large extent coincide with the aspirations of Hungary... To implement the plans Warsaw launches multiple programs, like the «Polish Card» for instance, which is to be received by around half a million Ukrainians, according to Polish newspaper Dziennik... Romania is another Ukraine’s neighbor and a member of NATO. It prepares to raise the territorial issue of North Bukovina, Hertsa district, the former three districts of Bessarabia: Hotinsky, Akkerman, Ismail and even the city of Odessa. The representatives of Ukrainian Romanians have already blamed Kiev for «genocide of Romanian minority» and illegal accession of «native Romanian lands»...

NATO, Russia – BMD in Europe Remains to be Bone of Contention (I)

On October 28 Romanian President Traian Basesku, Romania's Minister of Defense Mircea Dusa, US Under-Secretary of Defense for Policy James Miller, James Syring, director of the US Missile Defence Agency, and NATO Deputy Secretary-General Alexander Vershbow attended the groundbreaking ceremony held on the territory of Deveselu military facility, a former air base located at 180 kilometers east of Bucharest, the Romania's capital. The move confirms that Romania has become one of Washington’s main security partners in Europe...

Maastricht Treaty - Twenty Years in Force

The Maastricht Treaty (formally, the Treaty on European Union or TEU) came into force on November 1, 1993 to create the European Union, the common political system of United Europe and the single European currency – the euro... Is it not something we face today looking at the financial relationship between the North and the South? Or interethnic and interstate contradictions within the triangle Hungary – Romania – Slovakia?.. It brings it near to the prospect of a real confrontation flaring up within the «United Europe»...

The Anti-Brussels Front within the European Union

The mass celebration of Independence Day which took place last week in Hungary was for the first time in recent history accompanied by harsh slogans directed against the European Union and «foreign capital». Considering the popularity of the Hungarian government of Viktor Orban and the success of his economic policy, the conflict between Budapest and Brussels will not only continue to grow; it will draw other Central and Eastern European states into its orbit...

Transnistria: Accidental Sparks May Flare Smouldering Conflicts

On July 17 Romanian President Traian Basescu paid an official visit to Chisinau to discuss Moldova’s EU integration and stronger bilateral cooperation... Indeed, just before the Romanian President’s visit a group of Moldavian MPs made known they planned to appeal to the national Constitutional Court the treaty on defense cooperation between Moldova and Romania... The military treaty between Romania and Moldova has a serious provocative element. In 2008 the Georgian aggression against Russian peacekeeping contingent in South Ossetia did not bring up the possibility of involving NATO. Now with Romanian troops in the area an incident may become a spark to start a fire, a casus belli nobody wants...

Romania: Shale Gas and Geopolitics

Twenty Romanian cities have been hit by the protests against the government’s decision to start shale gas extraction... The manifestations have spread to the neighboring Bulgaria. Those who sympathize with the Romanian demonstrators went to the streets of Dobrich, the ninth most populated city in Bulgaria, the administrative centre of Dobrich Province and the capital of the region of Southern Dobrudzha. If shale extraction starts in Romania, the city and its hydro resources will be affected...

Obama Axes European BMD: Prospects for Russia-US Relations

On March 15 the United Stated made public its decision to cancel a key part of its Eastern European missile defense plan due to development problems and funding... US missile defence plans in Europe have been one of the touchiest subjects in US-Russian relations for years... The fact the US axed the fourth phase is certainly not the end of the controversy. The Russian officials never said the cancellation of the fourth phase is a solution...

Washington’s Banking Sanctions – Formal and Informal

...Since 1 April 2009, American financial regulators have fined European banks 32 times totalling nearly $25 billion... On 30 June 2014, the French bank BNP Paribas, which ranks fourth in the world in terms of assets and second in France, agreed to pay US authorities a record $9-billion fine. The bank’s management is charged with helping its Sudanese, Iranian and Cuban clients carry out dollar transactions banned by the US sanctions regime. In the coming months, giants of European banking like the German Kommerzbank and Deutsche Bank, French Credit Agricole and Societe Generale, and Italian Unicredit, among others, could also be subject to penalties...
