Congressional Foreign Policy Resolutions a Hint of Things to Come

In passing the so-called «Ukraine Freedom Support Act», the U.S. Congress has provided a hint of the foreign policy micro-managing in store for the Obama administration in its remaining two years in office. The Congress utilized every neo-conservative talking point and policy plank to include in the bill designed to punish Russia for the aftermath of the neocon-contrived fascist coup d’état in Kiev... Congressional action against Russia came at the same time the House and Senate passed a bill to punish current and former Venezuelan officials by denying Venezuelans visas and freezing their U.S. assets...

Kiev’s High Hopes in the Republicans Will Be Dashed

Republican victories in the US midterm elections - taking control of both houses of Congress - have kindled hopes in Kiev. It was thought that the generous American aid packages that were promised back during the protests on Maidan would now finally arrive, helping to pull the regime out of the hole it had dug for itself... A group of Republican senators has already promised that soon both houses of Congress can begin to debate the «Russian Aggression Prevention Act of 2014»... But in fact, Kiev’s calculations have been built on shaky ground...

The U.S. Elections: Bi-Partisan Vote Buying. Corporate PR Campaigns. Déjà Vu All Over Again

Eventually the tired game will exhaust itself.  Beneath the billions of dollars U.S. elections are lifeless events. The predictable flopping from Democrat to Republican and back again, with voters given no real choice but to punish the party in power — by electing the party that was punished previously. This endless, irrational dynamic is the foundation of the U.S. electoral system.

The Republican Götterdämmerung

The Republicans, who will soon control both houses of Congress, will seek to push the world to the brink of war. The neo-conservative war hawks who will soon take over Senate committees on foreign policy, defense, and intelligence will push for maximum confrontation with nations the neo-cons see as immortal enemies of America. In their eyes, a final showdown is nigh -- a Götterdämmerung -- arising from a certain rise in tensions between the United States and those who oppose its imperial policies. The world is about to become a very dangerous place...

America’s Moribund Democracy a Harbinger of More War

The US mid-term elections, which saw the Republican Party take control of the Senate and extending their hold over the House of Representatives, proves one thing: money can buy an election, but it can’t buy democracy. That indictment of eviscerated democracy in America, however, is a portent of more foreign aggression and wars. Congressional elections this week saw $4 billion being poured into media campaigns – a record high. But even with this largesse, the majority of American voters were underwhelmed by what was on offer. Some 60 per cent of voters did not even bother to cast their ballots. That is perhaps the real, shameful result of this election. Americans by their absence at polling stations are saying that there is nothing worthwhile voting for from among the two parties, whether Republican or Democrat...

The «Corker» in U.S.-Russian relations

Merriam Webster’s English dictionary defines a «corker» as an «amusing person». When it comes to drafting legislation to «punish» Russia with sanctions over the situation in Ukraine, Tennessee’s Republican Senator and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Corker certainly lives up to his name...

October 1, 2013: US Government Shut Down and Facing Default

America is facing a default in the coming days. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has said the government will have exhausted its borrowing authority by Oct. 17, leaving the United States just $30 billion cash on hand to pay its bills. In a letter to top congressional leaders, Lew warned that a repeat of the debt brinksmanship of 2011 could inflict great harm on the economy and that «if the government should ultimately become unable to pay all of its bills, the results could be catastrophic»... Obama urgently needs the ceiling raised again. Republicans will make him remember the unfulfillable promise given in 2011 to cut budget expenses. Experts are sure the US rating is doomed to go down in mid-October again. It’ll be a real blow for the government and private business, because ratings influence interest rates and the value of financial instruments (including bonds). The performance staged by Congress in October 2013 is to be no less captivating than the one the world saw in 2011.

A Stillborn Second Term? Obama Atop a Non-Viable System

In US history, second presidential terms have had a pronounced tendency to disappoint. The causes have ranged widely, from political scandal (think Nixon and Watergate) to personal scandal (think Clinton and Lewinsky) to a loss of credibility (think George W. Bush). But the upshot has been quite similar in all cases: an inefficacious second term of office. What would efficacy for President Barack Obama's second term mean, and how likely is he to accomplish it?..

Good Luck… and Just at the Right Time

Out of this election came an immense development - a man of colour won twice... Why is this so important? Because US demographics are changing so that now almost 30 out of 100 Americans are non-white. With the exception of Florida Cuban Americans, all will solidly support a Democrat of colour...

The Eclipse of US Politics, and its Global Consequences

What we are witnessing is the eclipse of US politics. The political parties are fading away as centers of policy formulation, and are willfully stripping the government of its powers vis-a-vis business corporations. In pursuing this course, US political leaders are losing relevance as points of appeal. Financial crises will reoccur, commodity prices will gyrate out of control, global warming will imperil our ecosystem, all thanks in large part to US policies - but the international community won't find any US politician who is able to do anything about it...

Financial Market Manipulation Is The New Trend: Can It Continue?

Governments and economists take their hats off to free markets.  Yet, the markets are rigged, not free. ... No country dependent on foreign capital is sovereign.  A country dependent on foreign capital, especially from enemies seeking to subvert the economy, is subject to destabilizing currency and economic swings.  Russia should self-finance. ...The greatest harm that is being done to the Russian economy is not due to sanctions and the US attack on the ruble.  The greatest harm is being done by Russia’s neoliberal economists. Neoliberal economics is not merely incorrect.  It is an ideology that fosters US economic imperialism. ... If Russia is to survive, Putin must protect Russia from Western economic institutions and Western trained economists.
