US Election 2016: Six Levels of Charade, and Three Rs

It would not be a stretch to argue that the most consequential development in the world over the last third of the twentieth century was the asphyxiation of the public interest in the United States. The largest and most advanced economy in history effectively neutered its own political system, thanks primarily to sustained pressure from wealthy interests (who promoted the dogma of free market beneficence, maligned and stigmatized government, systematically suborned politicians and regulators to do their bidding, narrowed the range of political discussion in the mass media, etc.). Momentous consequences ensued, both domestically and internationally...

Donald Trump’s Trump Cards

They say name spells the destiny. Donald Trump could be a good example of that. Being a grandmaster of political game he has become the wild-card in the high-stakes card game called the US election race. Evidently, Trump has fallen out of favor with media. At that he is the clear leader of the 2016 presidential campaign leaving behind all other GOP candidates...

Donald Trump: Man of Common Sense

The fourth round of GOP presidential debate took place on November 10 in Milwaukee. It was the same old pattern – all against one...

What is the significance of the outcome of the second round of Republican presidential debates?

The second round of debates between the US Republican presidential candidates was held last week in California, in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. This event attracted global attention, including in Russia, since it was primarily devoted to foreign policy...

Geopolitical Plate Tectonics Shifting U.S. Away from Center Stage

The failure of the Obama administration to purge its ranks of neo-conservative holdovers and embeds from the previous Bush administration has led to a geopolitical shift of major nations and regional alliances away from the United States. The presence of and policies enacted by such neo-conservatives as Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland and her counterpart for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Roberta Jacobson, have resulted in a major shift away from America by Latin America, European nations such as Germany and France, and an overall major international realignment...

Congressional Foreign Policy Resolutions a Hint of Things to Come

In passing the so-called «Ukraine Freedom Support Act», the U.S. Congress has provided a hint of the foreign policy micro-managing in store for the Obama administration in its remaining two years in office. The Congress utilized every neo-conservative talking point and policy plank to include in the bill designed to punish Russia for the aftermath of the neocon-contrived fascist coup d’état in Kiev... Congressional action against Russia came at the same time the House and Senate passed a bill to punish current and former Venezuelan officials by denying Venezuelans visas and freezing their U.S. assets...

Kiev’s High Hopes in the Republicans Will Be Dashed

Republican victories in the US midterm elections - taking control of both houses of Congress - have kindled hopes in Kiev. It was thought that the generous American aid packages that were promised back during the protests on Maidan would now finally arrive, helping to pull the regime out of the hole it had dug for itself... A group of Republican senators has already promised that soon both houses of Congress can begin to debate the «Russian Aggression Prevention Act of 2014»... But in fact, Kiev’s calculations have been built on shaky ground...

The U.S. Elections: Bi-Partisan Vote Buying. Corporate PR Campaigns. Déjà Vu All Over Again

Eventually the tired game will exhaust itself.  Beneath the billions of dollars U.S. elections are lifeless events. The predictable flopping from Democrat to Republican and back again, with voters given no real choice but to punish the party in power — by electing the party that was punished previously. This endless, irrational dynamic is the foundation of the U.S. electoral system.

The Republican Götterdämmerung

The Republicans, who will soon control both houses of Congress, will seek to push the world to the brink of war. The neo-conservative war hawks who will soon take over Senate committees on foreign policy, defense, and intelligence will push for maximum confrontation with nations the neo-cons see as immortal enemies of America. In their eyes, a final showdown is nigh -- a Götterdämmerung -- arising from a certain rise in tensions between the United States and those who oppose its imperial policies. The world is about to become a very dangerous place...

America’s Moribund Democracy a Harbinger of More War

The US mid-term elections, which saw the Republican Party take control of the Senate and extending their hold over the House of Representatives, proves one thing: money can buy an election, but it can’t buy democracy. That indictment of eviscerated democracy in America, however, is a portent of more foreign aggression and wars. Congressional elections this week saw $4 billion being poured into media campaigns – a record high. But even with this largesse, the majority of American voters were underwhelmed by what was on offer. Some 60 per cent of voters did not even bother to cast their ballots. That is perhaps the real, shameful result of this election. Americans by their absence at polling stations are saying that there is nothing worthwhile voting for from among the two parties, whether Republican or Democrat...

Why Washington Fears Britain Quitting EU

The countdown begins this week for the momentous question facing Britain: whether to exit the European Union – the so-called Brexit. While the issue seems to be primarily one for British national interests, lurking in the background is a crucial geopolitical concern for the United States. The outcome of the British referendum on Europe could severely undermine Washington’s global hegemonic ambitions and in particular its adversarial agenda towards Russia...
