Europe: Energy Security and Grudges

In many respects 2015 has gone down in history as a watershed year. The domination of the United States and its allies in world affairs was ceding place to the new system of multipolar world with Russia being an independent center of power. Russian Federation has re-established its presence in the strategically important areas and turned into a pole of attraction for other countries opposing West’s hegemony...

EU Chasing Anti-Russian Ghosts (II)

Russia’s plans to expand its gas supplies to Germany run counter to the interests of the European Union and could lead to the further destabilisation of Ukraine. This was the strange conclusion of a letter written to the European Commission by ten countries in Central and Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia...

Policy Regarding Path of Russian-German Relations

Sigmar Gabriel, Vice Chancellor and Minister of economic affairs and energy of Germany, visited Moscow from Oct. 28-29. The German politician had previously visited the Russian capital in March of last year, prior to a memorable referendum on the reunification with Crimea. Are we to understand that the ice has broken, and the German business community has finally convinced its politicians that the sanctions against Russia represent a road to nowhere, and if so, that it’s time to make an effort to find an exit strategy? Alas, that would be an overly optimistic assessment...

Nord Stream and Western Speculation

In today’s environment, the implementation of Russia’s Nord Stream-2 project is a key element in ensuring European energy security. And the project is struggling on in spite of the obstacles being put in its way by the US and certain circles among the leaders of the European Union who are willing to sacrifice the interests of Europeans for their own geopolitical games and outright speculation.

Who Is Betraying Eastern Europe?

The recent agreement between Russia and the European Union over the terms of the «winter package» of gas shipments to Ukraine provides a certain window of opportunity to the countries of Central and Southeastern Europe. In this new environment they will be able to draft a wider range of projects for transporting Russian gas, to serve both their own needs as well as for further transit into the EU, and also coordinate those projects with each other, as well as with Moscow and Brussels...

Russia has enough gas for everyone

The June 26 speech by Alexey Miller, the chairman of the board of Gazprom, at the annual general meeting of shareholders proved to be a cold shower for all those who hoped that Russia would pull out of Europe’s gas markets. Despite the fact that much of his report was devoted to Gazprom’s operations in the Russian Far East, the data Miller provided confirmed that Russian gas will not be squeezed out of Europe’s energy balance. Moreover, in the coming years Russian gas supplies will continue to play a steadily larger role in ensuring European energy security...

Europe Embraces Nord Stream Expansion

European countries, including the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom expressed their interest in the expansion of Nord Stream. The third and fourth strings of the pipeline enjoy the highest level of political support in Europe. As a result Nord Stream will be the cornerstone of European energy security in the decades to come...

Nord Stream. A Contribution to Europe's Energy Security

The October 8 launch of the second line of Nord Stream, an epic offshore pipeline connecting Russia's gas fields to Germany, resonated as a key contribution to the European energy security. With the second leg of the pipeline now fully functional, Nord Stream doubles its throughput and, moreover, opportunities arise to link other European countries to the new energy infrastructure... Overall, a large part of Europe is being equipped with an energy supply network in massive quantities pumping gas from Russia to the EU with no transitters sandwiched in between...

The «Northern Front» of Global Energy Wars

The probability is rather high the geopolitical battles around the North Stream will intensify in the near future. The USA acts as the leading instigator. One can expect the Scandinavian and Baltic states, as well as Poland to renew the previous attacks against the project. It’s not excluded the project will join the agenda of the impending top-level meetings: the G8 summit on May 18-19 in the US President’s Camp David country retreat and the NATO summit on May 20-21 in Chicago...

Nord Stream Launch and Europe's Energy Future

On September 8, Russian president D. Medvedev, German chancellor A. Merkel, prime ministers of France and the Netherlands Francois Fillon and Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Erwin Sellering, EU Energy commissioner Guenther Oettinger, and CEOs of Nord Stream consortium partners inaugurated the Nord Stream pipeline and opened the flow at the Western side of the world's longest gas transit link...Natural gas from Russia will be supplied to Germany, Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, the Czech Republic, and other countries…

Turkey: Treaty Commitments Breached as Ankara Prepares for Military Solution in Syria

The Russian military said on February 4 that it has "reasonable grounds" to suspect that Turkey   is making intensive preparations for a military invasion of neighboring Syria. Images of a checkpoint on the border between the Turkish town of Reyhanli and the town of Sarmada in Syrian taken in late October and late January show a buildup of transportation infrastructure that could be used for moving in troops, ammunition and weapons, spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said in an English-language written statement...
