Russian President Vladimir Putin began a six-day Latin American tour to coincide with the BRICS summit in Brasilia. The full agenda encompasses Cuba, Nicaragua, Argentina and Brazil... The President Putin’s tour started with the country which treats Russia with sympathy and love... The Russia’s President’s visit has a symbolic significance. Having gone through hard times in recent years the alliance between Russia and Cuba that emerged so may years ago after the victory of Cuban revolution has grown even stronger adapted to new historic realities... Russia plans to take part in developing the free trade zone in the port city of Mariel located in the vicinity of Havana. Health care and energy joint projects are on the rise. The military cooperation is also being intensified. Cubans know well how to handle the Russian systems...

‘Secret’ military bases in the Western Hemisphere

In November 2013, the National Assembly of Nicaragua ratified the government’s decision allowing Russian military units, ships and aircraft to visit the republic in the first half of 2014. Their crews have also been given permission to take part in the professional training of Nicaraguan military personnel and to share with them their expertise... Russia’s Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu recently announced plans to increase the number of bases abroad. He also mentioned that talks were being held with Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Singapore and the Seychelles...

The Great Nicaraguan Canal, or the Chinese puzzle for America

The idea of building an interoceanic canal through Nicaragua, similar to the Panama Canal but deeper and wider, has inspired the Nicaraguans for decades... In July 2012, the National Assembly of Nicaragua passed a law prepared by the government «On the legal status of the Great Interoceanic Canal and the creation of its management structure»... It has become known that the project’s investor is Empresa Desarrolladora de Grandes Infraestructuras S.A. (EDGISA). The Authority of the Great Interoceanic Canal and EDGISA have signed a contract with the Chinese company HK Nicaragua Canal Development Investment, which has been given the authority to develop the project... The operator company HKND Group Holdings Limited, which was registered on the Cayman Islands in November 2012, is managed by experienced Chinese businessman Wang Jing, who enjoys support at the highest state level...

Latin America between China and the U.S.

The expansion of economic collaboration between China and Latin America is one of the most important international tendencies. The country most frequently named as a stable partner of the PRC on the continent is Venezuela... In 2010 Beijing signed contracts with Argentina regarding investments of 10 billion dollars in the transportation sector. In that same year the PRC concluded several agreements with Colombia on collaboration in the area of tourism. In 2011 an intergovernmental agreement was signed with Bolivia on collaboration in the space industry for a period of 5 years. In 2012 barriers were removed from the path of imports of food products from Chile to the PRC... Other countries which have spoken of the strategic importance of collaboration with Beijing include Cuba, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, Brazil, Costa Rica...

Nicaragua's liberal elite is predictably concerned that Ortega will manage to retain presidency in the coming elections...
