Washington and Riyadh a Step Away from a «Final Solution» to the Syrian Issue

Recently the Syrian issue has flared up once more. Heated discussions in American political circles and emotional speeches from participants of the Arab League conference in Kuwait March 25-26 are not a discussion of plans for the peaceful resolution of the Syrian conflict; they are a debate about which method for capturing Damascus and overthrowing President al-Asad will be most effective... Now Americans see Syria as a way to get «revenge for Crimea» and the capture of Damascus as an opportunity to deprive Moscow of all its positions in the Middle East... Obama is to visit Riyadh March 28-29. At the end of the week it will apparently become clear what path al-Asad’s opponents have chosen for the «final solution» to the Syrian issue.

A Decisive Turnaround in the Syrian War: Al-Assad’s Victory in the Qalamoun Valley

Against the background of what is happening in and around Crimea, the war in Syria has been somewhat relegated to the sidelines of world politics. In the meantime, the country has experienced some extremely important events in the last few days that have spoiled the mood of the White House even further. The Syrian army has cleared the Qalamoun region of opposing forces, which is strategically as important as the Panjshir Valley in Afghanistan... There is also a growing danger that confronted with the ultimate defeat of al-Assad’s opponents, Washington may take advantage of Russia’s absorption in the Ukrainian crisis and opt for military intervention in Syria...

Lebanon and Syria in the Funhouse Mirror of International Justice

Out of a series of terrorist attacks which took place January 16-17, the explosion in Kabul attracted the most attention. Information about the explosion in Lebanon was hardly noticed at all. But the explosion in the Lebanese city of Hermel on January 16, as a result of which five people were killed and dozens were injured, is of great significance in understanding what is happening in Lebanon and Syria. The time for the Hermel bombing was chosen deliberately. On January 16 the first trial of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) began…

Worldwide Jihad and the Shiite Factor

A few days ago the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain, Khalid bin Ahmed al-Khalifa, urged the assassination of Hezbollah leader sheikh Hasan Nasrallah... The reason for this statement is that the government of the island kingdom has essentially lost control over the Shiite majority of its population, which is sympathetic to Hezbollah and oriented toward Shiite Iran... At the same time, Bahrain and other Middle Eastern allies of the U.S. – Israel, Saudi Arabia and the UAE – have been showing serious concern over the rapid, as it seems to them, rapprochement of the U.S. and Iran...

Pray for Peace in Syria

Like in the days of dirty war in Vietnam, millions of prayers, who belong to different religions, protest against the US plans to start war in Syria. They all join together in pray asking for peace in this country. On September 7 over 100 thousand people filled St. Peter's Square for a Syria peace vigil answering Pope Francis' call for a grassroots to pray for peace... On September 7 Ahmad Badr Al-Din Hassoun, the Grand Mufti of Syria, the spiritual Sunni leader known as a staunch supporter of President Bashar Assad, prayed for peace in the Umayyad Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque of Damascus... On September 6 the Antiochian Orthodox Church website published an open letter of Metropolitan Phillip on Syria addressed to the President of the United States. It is devoted to the recent news of the attack on the ancient Christian city of Maaloula in Syria by the rebel forces. The letter says, «This attack by the rebel forces, who are supported by the U.S. government, is an unspeakable act of terror, and speaks volumes to the viciousness of those rebel forces who seek to overthrow the Syrian government»...

The Media Deception About the Bombings in Lebanon

There has been an ongoing information war being fought for hearts and minds inside and outside of the Middle East. The war has mostly been tied to Syria. As the US and its allies begin to focus their attention on Hezbollah in Lebanon, the media war now includes the events in Lebanon. This, however, has not stopped the media attempts to depict the fighting in Syria in sectarian terms as a regional war between Shias and Sunnis or to demonize Syria’s allies...

Since it Failed in Syria, America Now Targets Hezbollah

Following Hezbollah’s intervention in Syria, the US government began targeting the Lebanese party with financial sanctions... In lockstep with Washington, the regimes of the Arab petro-sheikhdoms of the Persian Gulf in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates would start closing the businesses of Lebanese citizens, revoking their residencies, and then expelling them from their homes... On July 25, 2013 the European Union added the military wing of Hezbollah to its list of terrorist organizations... Hezbollah is undeniably being targeted by the US and its allies. Such targeting does not necessarily mean a third Israeli war against Lebanon. Stoking the fires of sectarianism in Lebanon with the intentions of starting a civil war could be the main and best Israeli-US option...

Lebanon is Being Prepared for Sedition as a Front in the Syrian War

The flames of division and fighting in Syria are being fanned into Lebanon. The US and its allies could be working with their Lebanese partners and proxies to ignite and internal conflict... The aim of a strategy that seeks to ignite Lebanon with fighting is aimed at forcing Hezbollah to withdraw from Syria and turn inward into its home turf. This is why the takfiri militants in Lebanon are being aroused and sectarian fighting between Sunnis and Shiites is intentionally being instigated. The weakening of the state and the erosion of its institutions is adding to the problem and may also serve this project...

Syria’s Conflict Spills Over to Involve Other Actors

By the end on May Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shiite guerilla group, said his fighters would help bring victory to President Bashar Assad in Syria's civil war. On May 25 he said in a speech marking the 13th anniversary of Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon that Syria and Lebanon faced a threat from radical Sunni Islamists. Hezbollah helped push Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon in 2000 and confronted the Jewish state in a short war in 2006... Hezbollah, a Shiite (Shia) movement, has stirred up sectarian feelings in the country by giving support to the Syrian government...

The Chemical WMD Story is Being Used to Cover the Rebel Retreat in Syria

The chemical weapons fiasco is being used to justify further US aid to the insurgents instead of the direct war that the likes of the Syrian National Coalition, the Arab petro-sheikhdoms, the neo-cons, and the Washington Institute for Near East Policy have been promoting as cheerleaders. The insurgent defeat has put a new set of plans into motion against Syria and its allies. Even while Secretary of State John Kerry talks to his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, to organize a second peace conference on Syria in Geneva, the US has declared that it is preparing to arm the insurgents with weapons...

After Geneva Talks: Federalization as Last Chance to Save Ukraine

Demonstrators were being shot at in the port city of Mariupol as a quadripartite meeting between representatives of Russia, the US the EU and Ukraine on settling the internal political crisis in Ukraine proceeded in Geneva. That’s why the final statement which envisions de-escalation of the situation is an undisputed success. Will the Ukraine’s interim government carry out its obligations?.. If Kiev goes on imposing its will, the state of Ukraine will collapse with its territory divided between other states. It will lead to the destruction of the post-war international security system based on the United Nations Charter and the Helsinki Final Act. It all has special importance for Europe, the continent with a plethora of disputed territories and re-shaped boundaries...
