Georgia after the Presidential Elections

...As a result of Georgia’s presidential elections, the country’s power structure, which is almost entirely dominated by pro-Western parties, has become firmly established. Although approximately half of the country’s population is disappointed with the Georgian government’s pro-Western orientation, this «Eurasian segment» of the electorate, as it is sometimes called, still does not have its own influential representatives in parliament. The prospect of improving Russian-Georgian relations remains questionable...

Abuse Video from Gldani Prison a Pivotal Point in Georgia's Race to Parliament

The huge scandal which erupted in Georgia following the release of a video showing inmates abused in Tbilisi's Gldani N8 Prison highlighted the obvious: as always, the post-Soviet republic's chances to hold elections in a healthy atmosphere are nonexistent... An hour after the video was broadcast by the Georgian television, human rights activists and relatives of the inmates flocked to the N8 Prison and, as the next step, blocked Tbilisi's Merab Kostava Prospect, demanding the ouster of the interior minister, the corrections minister, and the chief prosecutor... One thing beyond dispute in the context is that, in any case, prospects for democracy in Georgia dim day by day...

Hillary Clinton: No Hope for the Georgian Dream...

The US State Secretary Hillary Clinton ended up her Georgian leg of the Caucasian tour on June 5... In general the Clinton’s visit played into the hands of the ruling authorities that managed to make it look like the USA “blessing” for the prolongation of the Saakashvili and his party’s hold on power. The dream of Georgian opposition to replace the “nationals” from the chosen position of American favorites failed to come true...

Hungarian Factor. Transcarpathian Fragment of Ukrainian Patchwork

The “strange armistice” in Donbass and the upcoming parliamentary election in Ukraine have made pale the events in Transcarpathia, the region where the situation can hardly be called tranquil. The radical Ukrainian nationalism has become decisive for shaping the new regime’s policy, the reunification of Crimea with Russia, the mobilization of Ukrainians to fill the ranks of those who take part in the punitive operation against Novorossia – all told these factors have given impetus to separatist trends in the Transcarpathian region. Ukrainian MPs have granted self-rule to parts of two eastern regions while Budapest strongly supports the demands of Hungarian minority to grant special status to Transcarpathia.
