Israel Strikes Hezbollah in Syria: Key Takeaways and Comparisons

On Dec.19, Israeli forces launched a missile strike that killed Samir Kuntar, a senior Hezbollah leader, and several others in Syria. Over the course of the Syrian conflict, Israeli warplanes have hit targets inside the war-torn country several times, with most of those strikes said to be against weapons deliveries meant for Hezbollah...

Iran’s Golan «Third Front» and the Border Clashes between Israel and Hezbollah

The strategic equation in the Middle East is about to see major changes. It strongly appears that the Iranian-led Resistance Bloc or Axis o Resistance — comprised of Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, and a cross-section of Palestinian and Iraqi groups — is about to become more powerful than ever before... Not only is the Resistance Bloc emerging more powerful, but Iran is becoming indispensable to the regional security architecture of everything east of Egypt in the Mashreq...

Worldwide Jihad and the Shiite Factor

A few days ago the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain, Khalid bin Ahmed al-Khalifa, urged the assassination of Hezbollah leader sheikh Hasan Nasrallah... The reason for this statement is that the government of the island kingdom has essentially lost control over the Shiite majority of its population, which is sympathetic to Hezbollah and oriented toward Shiite Iran... At the same time, Bahrain and other Middle Eastern allies of the U.S. – Israel, Saudi Arabia and the UAE – have been showing serious concern over the rapid, as it seems to them, rapprochement of the U.S. and Iran...

The Media Deception About the Bombings in Lebanon

There has been an ongoing information war being fought for hearts and minds inside and outside of the Middle East. The war has mostly been tied to Syria. As the US and its allies begin to focus their attention on Hezbollah in Lebanon, the media war now includes the events in Lebanon. This, however, has not stopped the media attempts to depict the fighting in Syria in sectarian terms as a regional war between Shias and Sunnis or to demonize Syria’s allies...

Syria and the Spread of Sectarianism in the Muslim World (II)

The latest news from Iraq about the storming of two prisons by the insurgents and the consequent escape of some 500 prisoners, many of the them members of the Al-Qaeda or the Al-Qaeda associated Islamic State of Iraq, have added a new edge to the apprehensions about the assistance that the extremist forces in the Syrian opposition will be getting from sympathisers in Iraq...The initial inquiry by the Iraqi government suggests that the attackers were assisted by some of the guards and one can presume that many of the alleged accomplices were Sunnis…

Syria and the Spread of Sectarianism in the Muslim World (I)

The figures emerging from Syria are grim. Two months ago, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that by their conservative count some 93,000 people had been killed in since the insurgency began in March 2011... Since the beginning of this year Syrians have been fleeing their country at the rate of 6000 a day. In Jordan alone there are now 550,000 Syrian refugees... Within Syria the UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that some 4.5 million have been displaced...

Since it Failed in Syria, America Now Targets Hezbollah

Following Hezbollah’s intervention in Syria, the US government began targeting the Lebanese party with financial sanctions... In lockstep with Washington, the regimes of the Arab petro-sheikhdoms of the Persian Gulf in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates would start closing the businesses of Lebanese citizens, revoking their residencies, and then expelling them from their homes... On July 25, 2013 the European Union added the military wing of Hezbollah to its list of terrorist organizations... Hezbollah is undeniably being targeted by the US and its allies. Such targeting does not necessarily mean a third Israeli war against Lebanon. Stoking the fires of sectarianism in Lebanon with the intentions of starting a civil war could be the main and best Israeli-US option...

Selective Jihad

86-year old Islamic theologian Yusuf al-Qaradawi from Qatar, who spent a long time living in the US and was a trustee of the Islamic Society of Boston, is playing a major role in fuelling the conflict between Sunni and Shi’ite... A characteristic detail: in 2009, al-Qaradawi published a book entitled Fiqh of Jihad in which he refused to recognise the duty of Muslims to wage jihad in Palestine, which is being occupied by Israel, as well as in Iraq and Afghanistan, which are being subjected to American occupation. At the same time, however, he is calling for a “holy war” in Syria against Bashar al-Assad’s government!..

Lebanon is Being Prepared for Sedition as a Front in the Syrian War

The flames of division and fighting in Syria are being fanned into Lebanon. The US and its allies could be working with their Lebanese partners and proxies to ignite and internal conflict... The aim of a strategy that seeks to ignite Lebanon with fighting is aimed at forcing Hezbollah to withdraw from Syria and turn inward into its home turf. This is why the takfiri militants in Lebanon are being aroused and sectarian fighting between Sunnis and Shiites is intentionally being instigated. The weakening of the state and the erosion of its institutions is adding to the problem and may also serve this project...

Syria’s Conflict Spills Over to Involve Other Actors

By the end on May Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shiite guerilla group, said his fighters would help bring victory to President Bashar Assad in Syria's civil war. On May 25 he said in a speech marking the 13th anniversary of Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon that Syria and Lebanon faced a threat from radical Sunni Islamists. Hezbollah helped push Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon in 2000 and confronted the Jewish state in a short war in 2006... Hezbollah, a Shiite (Shia) movement, has stirred up sectarian feelings in the country by giving support to the Syrian government...

The Fantasy World of Central Bank Interest Rates Has Set the Stage for the Second Wave of the Global Financial Crisis

Starting from February, deposits made with the Bank of Japan began to accrue negative interest. The interest rate at the Central Bank of Japan now stands at minus 0.1%. This is no longer seen as shocking. The central banks in developed countries began backing into the negative zone for passive operations several years ago...
