Egypt’s Junta Has Nothing to Lose

The appointment of Robert Ford as the new American ambassador to Egypt was indeed an ominous sign that the Obama administration expected civil war conditions to arise in Egypt. Ford’s forte during his hugely successful «diplomatic» assignment in Baghdad in the middle of the last decade was to organize the notorious death squads, which tore Mesopotamia apart and destroyed Iraq almost irreparably... Ford is the living embodiment of the stunning reality that between the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, there has been no real shift in the United States’ policies in the Middle East aimed at perpetuating its regional hegemony...

The Winner`s Parade in the Gaza Strip, or When «a Pillar of Cloud» Cleared

No matter how hard Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with the Israeli propaganda machine claim that the outcome of operation «a Pillar of Cloud» against the Gaza Strip was a victory and a harsh lesson to the ruling Hamas movement there, it is now clear that in spite of the sustained sacrifices, Hamas was able to earn the greatest benefits from these events. This is evidenced by the unprecedented scale of the celebrations which were held in Gaza on December 8, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the creation of Hamas and coinciding with the cessation of military operations, during which Israel did not dare to venture into a ground invasion...

Egypt erupts in anger: Morsi’s grand bargain with US (I)

...Morsi would know that Washington has made a considered decision by now that the US (and Israel) can do business with the Muslim Brotherhood. The bottom line for the US and Israel is that the Brothers have not shown the slightest interest in challenging Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel. Furthermore, both Washington and Tel Aviv expect Morsi to act as a moderating influence on Hamas in Gaza... In retrospect, therefore, the recent conflict in Gaza has turned out to be a litmus test of Morsi’s intentions. Suffice to say, from the US and Israeli viewpoint, Morsi passed the test with flying colors. Morsi consulted very closely with Obama during the crisis and ordered the Egyptian intelligence to collaborate with its Israeli counterpart in bringing the conflict to an end... What needs to be factored in here is that the Egyptian intelligence is a creation of the US and as one regional observer noted recently, it «operates as an extension of the CIA station in Egypt»...

The Gaza conundrum (II)

Clinton’s fulsome praise for Morsi and indirectly for the Muslim Brotherhood underscored the phenomenal shift in Washington’s perspective on the Egyptian protagonists during the recent three-month period when US-Egypt ties hit a low point following the large-scale anti-American demonstrations in Cairo in September. Full credit goes to the Qatar emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for taming the Sphinx on the Nile banks. The yeomen service rendered by the two «Islamist» leaders in repairing the damage caused to the US-Egypt ties and the western interests in general following the downfall of Hosni Mubarak is without parallels in the region’s muddled history...

The Gaza conundrum (I)

This should have been the finest hour for Egypt’s President, Mohamed Morsi who is being lionized by the West as the Middle East’s latest peace broker. Yet at home the revolutionaries are burning down the establishments of the Muslim Brotherhood, accusing Morsi of being a ‘new Hosni Mubarak’, a new Pharaoh’. The contradiction needs an explanation. The recent conflict in Gaza has generated a sub-plot, which threatens to take over the main plot...

Israeli Сrimes Expose US Arab Despots

American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s hasty diplomatic shuttle from Southeast Asia to the Middle East this week can be seen as reflecting Washington’s priority to shore up stability in the region. It is a deep apprehension to maintain a shaky status quo that motivates Washington’s concern, not negotiating an end to appalling violence and human suffering in Gaza...

The geopolitics of the conflict in Gaza: U.S. calculations and miscalculations (III)

As soon as Obama was re-elected president of the USA, many came to expect that the relationship between Israel and the U.S. would deteriorate sharply, as everybody remembers the swordplay between the head of the White House and the Israeli Prime Minister, as well as the outright bet on the Republican candidate Mitt Romney by Netanyahu. It appears, however, that those who thought so greatly exaggerated. Those who were right were mindful of the strategic nature of relations between the two countries and the enormous influence of the Jewish lobby in the U.S....

The geopolitics of the conflict in Gaza: Hamas' calculations (II)

Israeli experts point out that as a result of the "Arab Spring" Hamas has significantly increased in military-technical and political terms. Moreover, in recognizing their responsibility for launching rockets at Israel, which it avoided until recently, Hamas has demonstrated that it no longer fears a direct confrontation with the Israeli military machine...A ground operation against Hamas in Gaza can be a repeat of the sad experience of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 2006. The Islamists in Gaza are no less powerful, trained and motivated than Hezbollah, which forced the then Israeli army, perhaps for the first time in its history, to withdraw due to high battle losses in southern Lebanon, and without solving any of the objectives...

The Geopolitics of the Conflict in Gaza: The Israeli Plans (I)

The whole course of events  proves that the Israeli military and the state machine operate in accordance with a predetermined plan, and it consciously and deliberately provoked the conflict in Gaza...Events around Gaza have, on the one hand, intimidated the Palestinian leadership, and on the other, served as a dress rehearsal for its removal...Consequently, from December a truly great war against the Palestinians may begin…

Turkey Will Have Its Own Gaza Strip

The future of Syria and Turkey is clouded as long as NATO, including Turkey, and the Salafist states of Arabia and North Africa continue to interfere in the Syrian tragedy. Hatay province will become a refuge for Syria’s Alawites and other minorities seeking protection from expected retribution from a Salafist-controlled or dominated government in Damascus... Such a scenario spells a potential civil war not only in Syria, but also in Turkey... There is also the question as to what side thousands of Afghan-Uzbeks who were settled in Hatay thirty years ago during the Soviet-mujaheddin war in Afghanistan will take...

Azerbaijan – Turkey: Caucasian Prisoner of Asia Minor

The Euro Atlantic and Eurasian integration processes have passed Azerbaijan leaving it on the sidelines. The Azeri call it the policy of «flexible alliances» or keeping at some distance from all other power centers except Turkey... Turkey has no interest in Azerbaijan’s moving to any kind of integration. Turkey wants to be a bridge that Azerbaijan has to cross in order get to the old continent. The Eurasian integration would offer great prospects for Azerbaijan but Turkey is strongly against. It firmly opposes any cooperation of Azerbaijan with Russia or Iran. There are many ways Ankara could use its leverage to impact Baku...
