From Leppävaara to war-torn Syria

Last year, Sayid Hussein Feisal Ali decided to leave Leppävaara, Espoo, to fight alongside jihadist militants in war-torn Syria. In early August, the young man, known by his nom de guerre Abu Shuayb as-Somali, appeared in a propaganda video uploaded to YouTube, urging Finns to join him in "the caliphate" of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Finland: Doomed Without Russia

...The EU leadership is testing the ground to see where it stands with Russia. That was the main purpose of Finish President Sauli Väinämö Niinistö’s visit to Russia. He met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi on August 15. The talks could be seen as a cautious attempt of the European Union to ease tensions in the relations with Moscow... It would not be an exaggeration to say that this is a matter of survival for Finland. The country occupies a special place in the relations between the European Union and Moscow with 10% of Finish exports going to Russia. According to Russian Federation of food industry, Russia accounts for about 25% of Finland’s agricultural production exports... The energy sanctions planned by the West may hurt the Finish economy even more... About 70% of the energy consumed by Finland comes from Russia...

NATO Beefs Up European Presence – Balancing on Brink of Dangerous Aggravation

«Changes to troop locations will be made at the political level to address the new paradigm in the wake of the Russian-Ukraine crisis», Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, head of U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, tweeted on May 7... The exercises conducted simultaneously result in a dangerous stand-off. It means balancing on the brink of serious aggravation and nobody knows where a spark may come from. SOF subversive activities in the explosive region are certainly not the best way to ease tensions. Sitting down and talking things over is a much more preferable approach. Perhaps the international event in Normandy was a chance President Obama opted to miss. But it’s never too late to do what is right.

Finland: NATO Membership – Dubious Goal

A major military exercise has kicked off in Latvia. The Sabre Strike war games involve 4,700 troops and 800 military vehicles. Russia sees NATO's military build-up in the vicinity of its borders as a sign of hostility. Not a member of the alliance, Finland is among the participants in the unfriendly action. While the debate has been simmering in for some time, Finland is encouraged to seriously consider full-fledged NATO membership by influential political circles and segments of social elite. The situation in Ukraine is used as a pretext for putting the issue to the fore. NATO membership could come up for debate before the 2015 parliamentary elections. The ongoing discussions may have prominent international implications...

Brzezinski about Ukraine: Underlying Meaning of Finland Option

A coup took place in Kiev of February 22, 2014. The same day the Financial Times published the Russia Needs to be Offered a ‘Finland Option’ for Ukraine article by Zbignew Brzezinski... Mr. Brzezinski has a long history of giving advices to many US administrations. Now he comes up with an offer to lend a helping hand to the new government in Kiev and deter Russia from taking resolute steps to defend its interests of vital importance in Ukraine... The Brzezinski’s idée fixe is the further fragmentation of Eurasia’s political map (along the former Yugoslavia lines) that’s why he virulently opposes any form of integration in the post-Soviet space...

NATO Steadfast Jazz Exercise – Chill of Cold War

...Exercise «Steadfast Jazz» is the largest in scale NATO training event in seven years to be held from Nov. 2 to 9 in a number of locations across the Alliance with the largest elements being hosted in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. If NATO were ever called on to defend an alliance member, «we have to be prepared for the more high-end of military operations», said U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove speaking at a NATO headquarters at Brunssum in the Netherlands on September 18...

The Western Challenge to Eurasian Integration

Recently, official Warsaw and not-so-official Stockholm have taken a number of steps to reinforce their successes in the East in order to gain new bargaining chips for the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November 2013, which will be devoted to developing a unified policy on the East for European countries... The main players in the project are Sweden in the north, Poland in the west, and NATO member Turkey in the south...

Nordic States Security: Trends and Prospects (II)

Leading Sweden and Finland into the embrace of NATO will make the nations targets of potential retaliatory strike while   compelling them to participate in unwanted wars. As one can see the policy is implemented against the will of common people who find good neighborly relations with everyone and sticking to traditional neutrality as the course that serves them best. They also realize Russia will not stand idle looking at further NATO expansion…

Nordic States Security (I)

Sweden has come out with a proposal to build a joint Nordic Battalion Force (NBF) to make it part of the agenda for Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark... The force advocated by Sweden would operate as a separate force to the European Union’s Swedish-led Nordic Battle Group (NBG), made up of troops and equipment from Finland, Norway, Ireland, Estonia and Latvia. Unlike the NBF, which would be Nordic-specific, the larger NBG is assigned to the EU’s standby international mission forces. But taking into consideration the fact that the major EU parties are also NATO members, it easy to guess the both formations will inevitably add to NATO’s capabilities too…

Finland: A Bit More About Terrorist Haven

...The Finish authorities render wide support to international terrorism and it makes Finland be the disgrace of Europe. Finish human rights activist Juha Molari said in this connection, that when the country’s leaders actually turn a blind eye on the activities of terrorist information networks and their funding, then a very serious political issue pops up: how come such a state could be a United Nations Security Council’s non-permanent member while ignoring the UNSC demands for terminating any support to Doku Umarov and his terrorist network in Finland?

Ukraine Crisis Continues

...In the 23 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, many Russians have been of the opinion that Washington, not the Soviet government, was the party to be trusted in the Cold War. What the Russian government has learned recently is that Washington cannot be trusted and that the Soviet government’s suspicions of the West were very well founded. Kiev’s military assault on eastern and southern Ukraine is not going to stop because Europeans finally see the light and object. Europeans not only stood aside for 13 years while Washington bombed civilians in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Pakistan, Yemen, and organized outside forces to attack Syrians, while isolating Iran for military attack, but also actively participated in the attacks. Europe has stood aside while Israel has massacred Palestinians on numerous occasions. For Russia to rely on Europe’s moral conscience is to rely on something that does not exist...
