US Military in Europe: from Forces Rotation to Permanent Presence

Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas urged NATO on June 20 to establish a permanent presence in his country responding to Russia’s Ukraine policy that his government sees as a threat. He said the allies were to «open your eyes and stay awake»... Until now NATO has implemented the policy of short-term army, air force and naval rotations in Eastern Europe to finish at the end of this year... The statements make believe the decision on NATO permanent basing near Russia must envision thorough study of all the consequences it would entail.

NATO Beefs Up European Presence – Balancing on Brink of Dangerous Aggravation

«Changes to troop locations will be made at the political level to address the new paradigm in the wake of the Russian-Ukraine crisis», Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, head of U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, tweeted on May 7... The exercises conducted simultaneously result in a dangerous stand-off. It means balancing on the brink of serious aggravation and nobody knows where a spark may come from. SOF subversive activities in the explosive region are certainly not the best way to ease tensions. Sitting down and talking things over is a much more preferable approach. Perhaps the international event in Normandy was a chance President Obama opted to miss. But it’s never too late to do what is right.

NATO Steps Up Hostilities over Ukraine (I)

On May 1, NATO’s Deputy Secretary General, US diplomat Alexander Vershbow said to a group of reporters that «we have to begin to view Russia no longer as a partner but as more of an adversary than a partner». He stated that the alliance is considering new measures to «deter» Russia, including deploying more forces to Eastern Europe. NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said ditto stressing that Russia is now more of an adversary than a partner in an interview to BBC Newswire... NATO’s three-week «Spring Storm» drills, involving a record-breaking number of 6,000 troops, will be held in 5 out of 15 Estonian counties, including southern and southeastern regions close to the border with Russia. Launched on May 5 the exercises are scheduled to finish on May 23... Russia considers the increase of NATO forces so close to its border a provocation...

US Uses Ukraine as Pretext for Launching Energy War against Russia

As it became clear that the economic sanctions against Russia are going to backlash against the United States and the European Union, the West started to study other ways to «punish» Russia, including bringing down market energy rates. Obama promised to start gas deliveries from the US straight to Europe. Many saw it as the start of energy war against Russia. On March 26, the US House Foreign Affairs Committee held hearing on «The Geopolitical Potential of the U.S. Energy Boom» to study the ways how the energy production growth in the United States could be used against Russia... Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs, said Europe’s dependence on Russia’s energy supplies paralyzed the US Ukraine’s policy. The US influence and the authority of US President have diminished globally. According to Royce, the way to rectify the situation is to weaken Russia by pushing it away from traditional markets and bringing energy prices down...

EU: Сolossus with Feet of Clay

Ten years ago, on March 29, 2004, the EU took a hasty decision on enlargement adding simultaneously ten more new members: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Cyprus and Malta. As a result, the European Union became an all-European organization instead of being an economic community. It gave rise to new problems and contradictions... The Ukraine’s becoming a failed state is a result of the EU’s policy of expansion further into Eurasia with the help of Eastern Partnership program...

Europe: Time for a Reappraisal of Values

Without any exaggeration, the events that have unfolded in the countries of the European Union following the global economic crisis can be called a humanitarian catastrophe. Not according to economic indicators, which remain high. The catastrophe for people living in the EU has been the collapse of the world they are used to, the destruction of a seemingly natural social partnership between state and society, society and capital. The scale of the decline in Europe's social standards is really quite impressive...

Estonia and neo-Nazi’s

In Estonia the 70 th anniversary of German invasion of the Soviet Union became a remarkable event first of all for hard-line nationalists and neo-Nazis: as soon as June 22 came they began to celebrate the anniversary of Hitler’s troops’ invasion of different Estonian towns… The head of the Simon Wiesentahl center, which investigates Nazi crimes, Efraim Zuroff says: “I would like to underscore that Estonia’s problem with Nazi criminals is in the lack of political will necessary to bring those criminals to Justice”. Zuroff says that Estonia is the shelter for the most terrible associates of Hitler...

Russia-Egypt Arms Deal: Major Breakthrough as US Middle East Policy Faces Another Set Back

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Russia, on August 12, 2014. It was his first official visit to the Russian Federation as President. And Vladimir Putin was the first leader to invite him for a visit outside the Arab world since his swearing-in as head of state. The agenda included introduction to a selection of Russian military hardware for sale. On September 17 it was reported that Russia and Egypt have reached a preliminary deal for Cairo to buy arms worth $3.5 billion from Moscow. Egypt and Russia have a history of being strategic allies. The emerging relationship reminds of the era of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, the great Egyptian leader. The deal concluded between Russia and Egypt on September 17 portends a gradual reduction in Washington's ability to control the quality and quantity of weapons that Cairo receives and to maintain Israel's qualitative military edge in the region.
