CICA Summit – New Security Concept to Match Global Trend

The fourth CICA summit took place on May 21-22, 2014 in Shanghai with China assuming the chairmanship for 2014-16. The Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is an inter-governmental forum created for promoting peace, security and stability in Asia... BRICS, the CSTO, the SCO, the Latin America’s Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) created in 2011 to keep outside the US and Canada – all of them are the examples of international organizations emerging in the world which exclude the US and its close allies to avoid the influence they find negative. The CICA summit is an element of the global trend taking tangible shape.

Afghanistan and its Future (III)

Washington does not exclude that the repetition of Syria scenario caused by NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan may result in strategic advantage to meet its interests. Controlled chaos is a tried and true method. A would-be war in Afghanistan will enable the Americans to control the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China, maintain instability in the vicinity of Iranian borders and exacerbate the relations between India and Pakistan. Finally, the United States will maintain a springboard to exert pressure on Central Asia. Since 2014 Afghanistan is to become a major security problem for Russia...

Will Afghanistan Follow Syria’s Scenario?

With ISAF to leave Afghanistan in 2014, the Taliban exercising control over large portions of the country against the backdrop of raging civil war is quite a probable scenario... Mullah Omar controls military operations in southern Afghanistan, specifically in the Helmand, Zabul, and Kandahar provinces... The executive leadership, known as the Quetta Shura Taliban (QST), is reportedly based out of Quetta, Pakistan. Taliban Commander Gulbuddin Hekmatyar controls military operations in much of northern Afghanistan, mainly in the Kunduz, Baghlan, Kunar, Kipsa, and Laghman provinces. Though not officially part of the Taliban, the Haqqani Network operates Taliban operatives in the regions around Kabul...

Terror Acts in US: Who Gains? (II)

Anton Chekhov, a great Russian writer, has once said «If in Act I you have a pistol hanging on the wall, then it must fire in the last act». If a country, like the United States churns out a number of contingency laws, then one day a contingency will really occur. The more US state debt grows, the more currency collapse becomes real and the chances the country would become an authoritarian state go up... The Patriot Act of 2001 was a laying stone of a legal foundation for future dictatorial rule...

CSTO, Uzbekistan and Integration of Eurasia

The last month of the passing year was full of events related to the process of former USSR integration. Uzbekistan has finally left the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a body steady on the way to becoming a full-fledged defensive alliance (otherwise the very term «collective security» would lose its meaning). The Eurasian Economic Community’s existence is nearing its end to give place to the Eurasian Economic Union by 2015...

Future of Russian Military Bases in Central Asia Called into Question

Russia's positions in Central Asia are increasingly coming under pressure as the deadline for the US withdrawal from Afghanistan is drawing closer. Uzbekistan was the first to subject its relations with Russia in the security sphere to a serious overhaul, and in no time the trend has proved contagious. So far, the defiance of other Central Asian republics is limited to demands of higher compensations for hosting Russian military bases: recently, Tajikistan rolled out an unprecedented cost of lease for Russia's 201st military base, and Kyrgyzstan indicated three sites on its soil would come at a higher charge for Moscow…

The SCO 2012 Shanghai Summit – on the Way to New World Order

The 12 th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit took place in Beijing on June 6-7, 2012. The annual event brought together the heads of states to review and gauge the importance of the SCO in global affairs... The main summit result is that the SCO has significantly varied and deepened the cooperation process in all fields and enhanced its international clout. It’s a win-win result for those who oppose a unipolar vision of the contemporary world.

Russia and the US Clash Over Approach to Fighting Afghan Drug Trafficking

This month Washington whose commitment to fighting drug production in the US occupied Afghanistan is widely called into question rolled out a new plan of coordinating the activities of Central Asian republic's anti-narcotic agencies. The initiative was, however, promptly blocked as potentially counterproductive by Russia, the country hit hardest by the Afghan drug output... The US agenda behind the initiative is to gain stronger political and military positions in Central Asia, while Washington actually lacks the resolve to take practical steps towards suppressing Afghan drug production and trafficking...

Migration, Extremism and Terrorism

Among many factors that have affected post-cold war world order migration, extremism and terrorism stand out prominently… Migration per se is not the problem. The problem lies with illegal migration... India claims that there are about 20 million illegal migrants in its territory. Similarly, one can find data in this context in many countries including Russia, Kazakhstan, countries of Western Europe, and in many other countries as well…

Ukraine Crisis Continues

...In the 23 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, many Russians have been of the opinion that Washington, not the Soviet government, was the party to be trusted in the Cold War. What the Russian government has learned recently is that Washington cannot be trusted and that the Soviet government’s suspicions of the West were very well founded. Kiev’s military assault on eastern and southern Ukraine is not going to stop because Europeans finally see the light and object. Europeans not only stood aside for 13 years while Washington bombed civilians in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Pakistan, Yemen, and organized outside forces to attack Syrians, while isolating Iran for military attack, but also actively participated in the attacks. Europe has stood aside while Israel has massacred Palestinians on numerous occasions. For Russia to rely on Europe’s moral conscience is to rely on something that does not exist...
