NATO’s Achilles’s Heel: Secession

It is clear that secessionist movements are the Achilles’s Heel of NATO. And they exist where NATO least expects them. There are increased calls for autonomy, secession, and outright independence in regions that host important NATO intelligence-gathering bases and sit astride NATO sea lanes. For example, the Cornish Mebyon Kernow movement has taken inspiration from the strength of the Scottish National Party to call for a Cornish parliament... Mec Vannin favors independence for the Isle of Man, located in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland. Celtic nationalism not only poses a problem for NATO in Britain, but Celtic nationalist movements in Brittany in France, where France maintains a naval base at Brest, and in Galicia in Spain, provide potential «soft power» salients against NATO in its own backyard...

A Game of Scottish Solitaire for Europe (II)

...Various anti-crisis programs are being prepared in different parts of Europe. Until now the leaders of the Veneto self-determination movement have been sounding conciliatory enough. They wish to retain the euro while others call for leaving the eurozone and go back to national currencies. Marin Le Pen, the head of French National Front, is convinced that her country has to return the national currency, something possessed by 95% of the countries in the world as the circulation of euro makes thousands of enterprises go bankrupt... The economic problems faced by the European Union and the growth of separatist trends in Europe are two sides of the same coin.

A Game of Scotch Solitaire for Europe (I)

«Whenever you fall, pick something up» advises a Scottish proverb. That’s a fairly good description of the current state of separatist movements in Europe. Various nooks and crannies of the Old World eagerly followed September’s referendum on self-determination in Scotland. Now many are trying to absorb and apply the methods used by Scottish separatists in order to advance their own interests - just like the Scots, themselves, post-referendum. The deepest reverberations from the events in Scotland were felt in Catalonia where new political skirmishes are rocking a nation already beset by a severe socio-economic crisis...

Scotland Kicks off Process of Europe’s Fragmentation

The Scottish referendum results show that something is rotten in the state of the United Kingdom. The event has given an impetus to the separatist aspirations in Ulster, Wales and the Island of Maine and even in the tin-rich Cornwall County believed to be the homeland of legendary king Arthur. The idea of getting more preferences from London without offering anything in return has become popular. The referendum has changed Scotland. The turnout was great with people of all walks of life and ages going to polls... In Europe separatists are gaining strength in Catalonia, Flandria (Belgium), Corsica (France), Northern Italy and Bavaria (Germany). They construe the referendum results as a victory of independent Scotland because it has asserted its right to self-determination...

Catalonia to Continue Press For Independence Referendum

News | 10.04.2014

The Resurgence of European Separatism

A 1.5-million-person demonstration in Barcelona in support of Catalonian independence and the fact that the Catalonian parliament is controlled by two separatist parties are the most noticeable signs of the new blossoming of separatism in Europe. Earlier, in October 2012, British Prime Minister Cameron and First Minister of Scotland Salmond signed an agreement on the holding of a referendum in 2014 on the independence of this part of the United Kingdom. At the same time, the Flemish separatists from the New Flemish Alliance won the local elections in Belgium. Nationalists have also come to power in the Basque Country in Spain. The examples cited are only the tip of the enormous separatist iceberg of Europe...

Crisis An Instrument in Building the Euroempire

...If another austerity package is adopted, the country would fall apart and downtown Madrid would be left alone to repay the sovereign debt... The carefully engineered and fueled debt crisis, coupled to Brussels' regionalization policies, not only causes nation-statehoods in Europe to crumble but, from a wider perspective, undermines national sovereignty and statehood as general principles.

Liberation of Europe: Siege of Budapest

The Battle of Budapest (October 29, 1944 till February 13, 1945) was a great battle of WWII. The victory paved the way for liberation of Hungary, destruction of the Hitler’s coalition in Europe and blockade of German forces in the Balkans... The Soviet 2d and 3d Ukrainian Fronts were confronted by German Army Group South, part of Group Center and the army of Hungary, the last ally of Nazis in Europe... The Hungarian capital was encircled. Hitler ordered Obergruppenfuehrer-SS Karl Pfeffer-Wildenbruch to fight to the last. The storm started on December 26, 1944 to continue for the next two months. For comparison, Berlin was captured in two weeks...
