Cuba and US Foreign Policy

...The shift in the relations between Washington and Havana gives rise to speculations related to Russia-Cuba ties. For instance, the Los Angeles Times writes «Better relations between the United States and Cuba also could undermine Russia's expectation of Havana's backing in political and diplomatic confrontations that pit the former superpowers against each other». The Washington Times believes that the US intelligence is concerned over the Russia-Cuba security agreement concluded in May 2014 establishing a joint working group between Russia’s Security Council and the Cuban Commission for National Security and Defense...

Is the U.S. Setting a Course for Detente with Cuba?

The ceremonial handshake between presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro at the funeral of Nelson Mandela caused outrage among conservative circles in the U.S. and Cuban immigrants in Miami. Some even accused Obama of being a «secret communist». Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen expressed her indignation by calling this handshake a «propaganda coup» for Raul Castro. This is exactly how a number of analysts in the U.S. and Latin America have assessed the occurrence, recalling that several months ago Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry promised a «change in course» with regard to Havana...

Cuba: to Preserve the Gains of Revolution

On July 26 1953 in the morning a group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro stormed the Moncada barracks in Santiago de Cuba. The first attack against the Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship failed, but a signal to start fighting the regime was sounded... The guerilla war ended up in a triumphant march of the insurgents coming to Havana on January 1 1959... The economic blockade of the island led by Washington was a demonstration of reprisal against the “communist regime” aimed to incite hunger rebellions and counterrevolution. No way. The Fidel’s team was staunch... The US policy aimed at international isolation of Cuba has long ago failed without fame. The evidence - the annual voting in the United Nations on the issues of economic blockade imposed by the United States. Actually only the USA and Israel vote for it...

BOKO HARAM: its transformation into a transnational terrorist corporation

In recent years we have seen many radical organizations become internationalized - factions that once confined their operations to within defined state boundaries have been converted into transnational terrorist corporations. Of course, certainly not all radical organizations make this transition. Some, such as the Taliban, remain «domestic» entities. However, many are «suddenly» able to easily transcend the national boundaries of not only neighboring countries, but whole regions that they are able to overtake. This was the sort of transformation made by al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. We are now watching Boko Haram (BH) undergo a similar metamorphosis into a transnational «terrorist corporation»...
