Jeb Bush’s ‘Transparency’ Ploy

In an opening volley of a possible clash between two well-to-do political dynasties, Jeb Bush challenged Hillary Clinton by releasing more than three decades of tax returns,  both to quiet criticism of his own past business dealings and to highlight Clinton’s reputation for secrecy, writes Chelsea Gilmour.

How Obama Consolidated the Legacies of Bush and Clinton

As the presidency of Barack Obama has evolved, or devolved, as it were, it’s become clearer to everyone that he is little more than an imperial caretaker committed to expanding the American empire. Those who expected a circumspect constitutional law professor to build a Hadrian’s Wall on the Iraqi border and declare the republic overextended, have been sorely disappointed. Instead, proving himself a true foot soldier of exceptionalism, Obama has continued two foreign policy initiatives, one pursued by George W. Bush, the other by Bill Clinton. Despite the puerility of one and cynicism of the other, Obama has followed both plotlines into the political abyss, cementing forever his role in the decline of the West.

US 2016 Presidential Race: Impact on America-Russia Bilateral Relations (I)

It is widely believed the US-Russia relations are at their lowest point in decades. The United States presidential election is expected to be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Will the results have an effect on U.S.-Russia relations?..

The Flowers of American Democracy

There is a real variety of democracy being cultivated in the world, from the democracy growing wild in Somalia to the hothouse democracy in Sweden. But the most exotic democracy is being cultivated in the United States of America, where local breeders have learned to interbreed flowers of the law with weeds of violence... A US Senate task force has spent several years working on a report on CIA torture... The authorities decided to publish just 500 of the report’s 6000 pages so as not to shock the American public. However, even these 500 pages have caused human rights defenders to cry out: «Gentlemen, what are you doing? What is the CIA doing with Gestapo-like torture chambers?»...

The resurrection of the neocons

Like proverbial «bad pennies», many of the leading neo-conservative architects of America’s failed interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan are being hauled back in front of television news cameras to comment on the current predicament that Washington finds itself with a surging «Al Qaeda» spinoff attempting to seize control of eastern Syria and western and northern Iraq and transform the area into a radical Islamic «caliphate»... The resurrection of the neo-cons would not be possible without the complicity of their enablers in the corporate media...

Obama as a Third World Strongman

President Barack Obama entered office as a «hope and change» candidate who promised to be far different from his predecessor George W. Bush. However, in his fifth year in office, Obama has taken on the trappings of a «strongman», a leader found more often in Africa, the land of Obama’s paternal lineage, and in Asia, from where his step-father hailed. Obama has not only maintained unprecedented «unitary executive» powers amassed up by Bush and his vice president, Dick Cheney, but in the area of surveillance and press restrictions, Obama has gone far beyond the preceding administration...

The Return of Empires (VI)

The rebirth of the imperial spirit in the West is moving along two sometimes converging, but in recent times increasingly diverging, lines. Looking at Europe's relations with its neighbours, one can see that the European Union initially pursued an imperial policy with regard to countries in Central and Eastern Europe that had joined the EU, but then began to extend the same policy to other countries. The line, however, is looking increasingly faded: many EU countries have no enthusiasm regarding its further expansion and, what is more, there is a growing feeling that this federative quasi-empire will soon collapse...

Post-Legal America and the World Order: Drone Killing Today, Cyber Bully Tomorrow?

Even the most casual observer of international affairs since the turn of the century is familiar with the willingness of the government of the United States to bypass international law under circumstances it alone determines. The war of aggression launched against Iraq under false pretenses ten years ago this month may be the first example that comes to mind, but there are numerous others...
