German Chancellor Angela Merkel intends to visit Washington in the coming months at the invitation of US President Barack Obam. German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said Obama and Merkel had a telephone conversation.
"Presiden Obama invites her (Merkel) to Washington and the Chancellor accrpts the invitation," Seifert pointed out.
He said Obama wished Merkel a speedy recovery after an injury she had received during skiing. Obama also congratulated her on the formmation of a new Cabinet of Ministers. Seibert said the German Chancellor and the US President exchanged opinions about this year's agenda, and discussed the them of talks on Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and preparation for a NATO summit which is to be held in September.
The German Chancellor last visited Washington in June 2011.
German-US relations are living through no easy times in connection with the scandal over electronic spying which the US National Security Agency (NSA) conductrd with regard to the authorities and citizens of the Federal Republic. Specifically, the German government received data on a possible eavesdropping on the part of the NSA of Merkel's mobile phone.
