Syria accuses U.S. of grossly interfering in LAS affairs

News | 05.01.2012 | 13:53

The Syrian government has accused the United States of grossly interfering in the affairs of the League of Arab States as LAS observers continue monitoring the situation in Syria.

Earlier, the U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland announced, prior to the LAS mission’s conclusions, that Damascus had failed to fulfill its commitments within the framework of the Arab initiative aimed at stopping violence in the country.

She said that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman would hold consultations with LAS representatives in Cairo just ahead of a planned meeting of the League’s foreign ministers.

The West and the Syrian opposition have criticized the LAS mission over failing to expose any serious violations on the part of the Bashar Assad regime and instead confirming the presence of armed opposition groups in Syria.
