Syria holds military exercise to repel invasion

News | 21.12.2011 | 12:16

On Tuesday, the Syrian armed forces held an exercise to test the operational readiness of the country’s air force and air defence troops to repel a foreign invasion of Syria’s air- and maritime space.

Taking part were combat aircraft, air defence batteries and paratroopers.

Syrian naval ships launched anti-ship missiles.

Syria has been swept by continual antigovernment protests for nine months now, the protests that are supported by the United States and the European Union, which have slapped economic sanctions on Damascus.

According to the United Nations, the death toll has topped 5,000.

The Syrian authorities claim that the number of victims on both sides is 1,500, including 1,000 police officers.
