Decision need to be made in the interests of European security, which would guarantee that NATO plans are not directed against Russia or that Russian plans do not target NATO.
The statement came from Chairman of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee Viktor Zavarzin in response to yesterday’s address by President Dmitry Medvedev concerning the situation around missile defense.
General Zavarzin told the Interfax agency on Thursday that in his opinion the spread of ballistic missiles and missile technologies was a common challenge for Russia and the United States and that it could only be countered through joint efforts and the creation of common missile defense. But NATO is building the European missile defense shield within the parameters defined by Washington, which could pose a threat to the Russian strategic nuclear forces by the end of the decade.
Faced with this scenario, Russia has to take adequate counter measures, the general said.
