Senior U.S. officials will outline new sanctions to increase pressure on Iran over its nuclear program, the State Department said.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner are scheduled to unveil the new steps at 4:30 p.m. EST (2130 GMT) at the State Department, the agency said.
Earlier in the day, Britain announced that it was cutting links with Iran's banks as "evidence" shows that they are involved in the country's development of a nuclear weapons program.
Canada is expected to follow suit in a coordinated move.
In its Nov. 8 report, the International Atomic Energy Agency outlined alleged activities pointing to clandestine nuclear bombs making by Iran, prompting the U.S. and some European nations to mull expanded sanctions on the Islamic republic.
