Today, the Syrian opposition is holding antigovernment protests throughout the country, urging that President Bashar Assad step down, the formerly arrested protesters be released and troops pulled out of the cities.
According to the Naharnet news agency, the opposition leaders will check if the ruling regime is honouring its pledges in keeping with the Arab League Road Map plan for an intra-Syrian settlement.
Under the plan, the authorities are due to avoid violence against the protesters, release all political prisoners and start talks with the opposition within the next two weeks.
Damascus also agreed to allow foreign reporters and Arab League officials to monitor the situation in Syria.
