«Privilege to Conduct Independent Foreign Policy»

What is the place of Russia in the XXI century world system – is it a raw materials appendage or one of «power centers»? Why many Russian initiatives are not welcomed by international community? Why the system of international relations continues to stick to the «double standards» principle? When will Russia become strong enough to flatly exclude the abuse of power from international practice? How to make the world system balanced? The reality of contemporary world demands clear answers to all these questions – that’s why the Putin’s article «Russia and the changing world» (Moskovskie novosti, 27.02.2012) stands out to attract attention...

Caught in Turbulence

The views expressed by Sergey Lavrov at the January 18 media conference reflect Russia's evolution over the past years from a country which – at the cost of its great power status but to the liking of powerful external players and its domestic fifth column – used to be ready to steer a fully dependent course to that demonstrating newly found assertiveness in the international politics. US President Bill Clinton reportedly said in 1995 that the US would let Russia exist but not as a great power. The lesson to be learned from the past 15 years is that there are limits to the US control...

Eurasian Project a Threat to New World Order

One might be tempted to regard Russian premier V. Putin's paper “A new integration project for Eurasia: The future in the making”, which saw the light of day in Izvestia on October 3, 2011, as the presidential front-runner's sketchily laid out program, but upon scrutiny that appears to be only one part of a wider picture. The opinion piece momentarily ignited wide-scale controversy in and outside of Russia and highlighted the ongoing clash of positions on global development...

Who Needs A Crisis in Kosovo?

The withdrawal of the Western coalition from Afghanistan makes it timely to create new jobs for people whose main skills lie in the sphere of gunfire, and Kosovo may be one of the places where openings will be found... The conflict at the border between Serbia and Kosovo stemmed from the interwoven interests of countries, supranational groups, and organized crime and, therefore, the Kosovo crisis promises to be permanent, even if there are no Serbs left in the province...

They put others on trial, not to be tried themselves. On the arrest of General Mladic

The recent arrest of the Chief of the General Staff of the Republika Srpska Army, General Ratko Mladic, as well as preparations for his extradition to The Hague is another in the chain of events that are part of the on-going “mopping-up of History”… Ratko Mladic was the central figure in  the  Bosnian War. He is known of far beyond the Balkans. The Daily Telegraph has put him on the list of 30 prominent modern-day military leaders, adding in a comment that the officers who held talks with him saw him as a genius at tactics. The enemy feared him, while Serbs idolized him.

A Strategy Aimed at Ruining Libya

A death sentence to Libya's sovereignty was handed out long before the protests inspired by Western intelligence services shook the country and the UN Security Council responded to the situation with anti-Libyan resolutions. There are fundamental causes behind the strategy aimed at ruining Libya. Years ago, it was designated as a target by the architects of the new world order, and the air raids against Libya were just a matter of time...

OSCE Summit in Astana: No result, but Sustaining the Process Already a Success

The initiative to reform the European security architecture – and consequently that of the OSCE - should be credited to Russian president Dmitry Medvedev who proposed back in 2008 a new European security treaty aimed at creating the continent's integrated and indivisible security space. In Astana, Medvedev's initiative upgraded to the Euro-Asian level was upheld by Kazakh president N. Nazarbayev who invoked an idea “to form a single security space bound by four oceans: from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the Arctic to the Indian”...

The Lisbon Reset

The adoption of a new strategic concept by NATO at the alliance's Lisbon summit is a development of historical proportions which in many respects directly affects Russia's interests. Stating clearly that “NATO poses no threat to Russia”, the document reflects strategic shifts in NATO's relations with the country... the phrase implicitly carries an admission that NATO used to pose a threat to Russia prior to November 19, 2010 and that the post-Soviet enlargement of the alliance was meant to clip Russia's geopolitical space...

G20 in the Labyrinths of the Global Economy

The Seoul G20 summit will stay on record as a failed attempt to find a way out of the labyrinths of the global economy... Therefore, in the foreseeable future the Federal Reserve will keep the printing press running, China will be pushing down the yuan value, and Europe – strengthening the Euro... And still, at the moment there is no alternative – the G20 summits remain the only forum for comprehensive discussions of global economic problems.

Europe's Center Drifting East

The world as a system may be battling a crisis, but crises - with all the pains that accompany them - do open up opportunities. In the current settings, Russia is presented with a choice of niches in the emerging global configuration, and its searches clearly meet with a measure of understanding in Americas, Europe, and Asia...

Germany: The Parties Trial of Strength

The North Rhine-Westphalia elections continued a series of failures of Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union at local elections that actually started since the last Bundestag election in September 2009. The loss of votes by the Christian Democrats each time regional elections take place has become a steady tendency... the election result can be considered as a proof of discontent caused by austerity budget that the government of Angela Merkel advocates...
