The Syrian Pendulum

Official Damascus, ignored by the West, not only remains the main political force in Syria, but is also gaining ground against its adversary. The Syrian army has rearmed, gained needed battle experience, augmented its forces with professional volunteers from Iran, Iraq and Lebanon, and begun to systematically make up its losses. Although Damascus, understandably, denies that foreigners are participating in military operations on their side, many sources say that they are, and that they are being led by the commander of the Quds Force of the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution, Iranian general Qassem Suleimani...

Kerry Takes up Syria in Moscow: Start of Bumpy Road or Attempt to Inveigle into Foul Play?

...The Assad’s government remains stable enough; Russia, China and other states are staunch preventing an outside intervention. But by endorsing the Russian initiative Washington pursues its own goals... There is no ground to believe the most ardent radicals will give up arms. The pro-Western opposition would also like to enter the capital backed up by the force ready to support it further on... It’s expedient no avoid Russia being used for pushing Assad to make unilateral concessions. Like, for instance, it was done the 1990s when Milosevic led Serbia during the Yugoslavian crisis. Then they will exert pressure on Damascus keeping Russia away...

Boston Terror Act: Use of Double Agents is Risky Business

...So the Federal Investigation Service was cunning enough saying it knew nothing about the Tsarnaev brothers in response to the 2011 Russia’s FSB warning. The perfectly knew the brothers had connections in the Caucasus, it was the FBI who sent them there after all. No matter Washington declares we are in the same boat fighting terrorism, the United States leaves a room of action when it comes to classifications. It defines on its own who is a terrorist and who is a freedom fighter depending on circumstances. If the fighters pose no threat to the United States, then why not try to use them against Russia?..

Israel Draws Allies into Syrian Conflict

...It’s obvious, Israeli strategists rely of technological edge. Politicians should take into account that Irsael’s involvement into the Syrian conflict on the side of the opposition will not make the government more popular in the eyes of population and will finally pour water on the mill of Muslim radicals. The West and Israel stubbornly refuse to support the national reconciliation in Syria striving for unilateral domination. Bloodshed and destruction is on the rise, as well as the chances to succeed of the loyal forces. There is a vicious circle of crimes and mistakes: Iraq, Libya, now Syria, stepping on the same rakes over and over again...

Pakistan Elections: Musharraf Operation Failed

...Washington is not concealing its concern over the outcome of the presidential race in Pakistan. The election is slated for May 11. According to the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, “With the United States heavily invested in the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014, the next Pakistani government will be vital to upholding U.S. interests in the region.” It’s not only the situation in Afghanistan that is at stake, but also the control over the nuclear potential...

America's Middle East Initiatives are Stalling Once Again

Experts are linking America's efforts in the Middle East with possible preparations for a Syrian intervention. It has been reported that the US Defense Minister, Chuck Hagel, is to make an «urgent» visit to Israel on 21 April. On 22 April, meanwhile, a meeting is planned between the Israeli delegation and their Turkish colleagues, at which will be discussed «further steps in the reconciliation of both sides». One cannot rule out that following this, somewhere near the end of April-beginning of May, a more active phase of the West's interference in Syrian affairs will begin with the help of Turkey and Israel...

Tom Donilon Visits Moscow: Prospects for Reset

Tom Donilon, the US National Security Advisor, visited Moscow on April 14-15... The visit had been thoroughly prepared and postponed a number of times. Still, the timing was hardly propitious. The Magnitsky bill was signed into law on April 12, 18 Russia citizens will be barred from entering the United States, and their US bank accounts will be frozen... Moscow responded with the same number of people included into the Guantanamo blacklist, including the US citizens forbidden to enter the Russia’s territory for being involved in unlawful detentions abroad, jail tortures, as well as initiators of anti-Russian actions...

Israel: Secular or «Postmodern» Revolution?

The new government formed recently in Israel has decided to create a commission to draft legislation on the enlistment of so-called ultra-Orthodox Jews, or Haredim, into the army (IDF) or alternative service... Commentators have spoken of the secular revolution in Israel and the inevitable social disruptions in the country associated with changing the situation of the Haredim. This topic worries the local community even more than the outcome of negotiations between Palestine and Israel... Ultra-Orthodox rabbis, politicians and press have already attacked the new Israeli cabinet, calling «the government evil and hateful»...

Obama and Middle East: Gap between Plans and Reality

President Obama has wound up his Middle East trip, which included Israel, Palestine and Jordan, the region where conflicts are raging. There had been hopes there would be a breakthrough in the Israeli – Palestine deadlock, perhaps thanks to involvement of king Abdullah II of Jordan. It had been clear before the visit President Obama had nothing to offer that would be acceptable for the both sides, so the assistants focused on enhancing his image in the countries included into the trip’s plan...

The Return of Empires (VII)

America’s tenacious desire to preserve its imperial status despite all the costs that come with it has a completely rational basis. America lost its position as world leader in the manufacture of material goods quite some time ago and for the most part exists thanks to its financial and technological intermediation and its virtual economy...The weakness of America’s material production is even predetermining the country’s need to preserve its intermediary status using military force and imperialmethods. So it is turning out to be a catch-22. Imperial ambition is wearing the United States down, but without it, the US would be unable to maintain its established method of production…

US Senate Panel Endorses Further Involvement in Syria

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has overwhelmingly approved the Syrian Transition Support Act that calls on the U.S. to provide arms to «moderate» Syrian opposition groups, underscoring growing sentiment among lawmakers for a change in the U.S. stand on the conflict. The 15-3 vote showed broad support from both parties... The Senate panel’s vote will hinder diplomacy efforts at the time the world is pinning hopes on Moscow-initiated Geneva conference...
