Russia, China, the leading Western states and the Arab League joined together in support of the UN Security Council’s statement on Syria. The joint stance gives some hope for peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis. On the other hand the real state of things leaves no place for optimism. Those who signed the statement pursue different, if not outright opposite, goals... If we let Bashar Assad be toppled no doubt Syria will become the second Libya...

On February 24 a “Friends of Syria” meeting is to take pace in Tunisia. The Syrian leadership received no invitation and, as Washington said, Russia’s participation is “not needed”. Russia refused to take part. The USA, Great Britain, France, Turkey, the Arab League and the “Istanbul opposition” are among participants. They concentrate forces for a military action. The US reconnaissance aircraft already fly over the Syrian airspace, some sources say, the British special operations forces are already operating in the territory of Syria.

The current situation in Syria remains one of the most important components of the Middle Eastern and international policies... Since the beginning of the crisis in Syria I have made two trips to that country as a member of international delegations in August 2011 and in January 2012. If we watch the dynamics of situation’s development over that period on the one hand we can state intensification of terrorist groups in Syria and on the other hand we see a broader people’s support of President Bashar Assad...

The situation in Syria is definitely getting worse... The scale and level of coordination of the terrorist acts give ground to say they were subversive operations well planned and controlled from abroad. Al Kaida, Fatah Al Islam (the Victory of Islam), Jund Al-Islam (the Soldiers of Islam), A Talia al-Mukatila (Fighting Vanguard) military wing of Muslim Brotherhood, all these organizations have teams of militants operating in the Syrian territory besides criminals. The total number is 2-4 thousand. They get arms through Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan...

The success of the parties representing political Islam in the first round of the parliamentary elections in Egypt deserves attention. New political forces, which were formed after the revolution of January 25 th and which are not linked with corrupt regime of Mubarak, enjoy people’s trust. It is quite likely that they will manage to find common language with the Egyptian intellectuals who are the most experienced in politics in the Arab world and they will manage to build more equitable society based on traditions of the Islamic culture...

Sketchily, two results of the Arab Spring are visible at the moment. First, the politicized Islam strengthened its positions in the countries where entrenched regimes had been brushed off the scene. The advent of the pro-Islam forces should not be discussed in an exclusively alarmist tone – chances are that in Tunisia and Egypt the nations that got rid of the former corrupt regimes will manage to build much better societies based on their traditions which, as a matter of fact, are centered around Islam... The second result is that the post-Arab Spring regimes are not going to be undividedly pro-Western, meaning that the Arab world and, partially, the world as a whole, will have to sustain a completely new political balance...

Regime changes in Tunisia and Egypt, the demolition of Gadhafi's rule in Libya, and lingering conflicts in Yemen and Syria were the first results of the tide of mass protests that rose in the Arab world in 2011. While in Tunisia, Egypt, and Yemen the outpourings of popular discontent were prompted by evident socioeconomic ills, corruption, and lack of democracy, the developments in Syria and especially in Libya were mainly attributable to external influences...

Anti-government protests in Syria have added more fuel to the fire of the Arab Spring... The Syrian crisis is being actively affected from abroad. Various reports confirm that there is a plan aimed to divide Syria into several parts, with some areas annexed to Turkey, the Golan Heights going to Israel, and probably separate Kurdish and Druze territorial entities...

The society in Libya is a patchy conglomerate of clans and tribes, with Sufi orders, particularly the Senusite oder, playing a significant role in organizing their transactions. The Senusite oder enjoys great influence in the country's east, the homeland of Libyan king Idris I ousted by Gadhafi. This is why the rebels in Libya carry flags from the epoch of king Idris I....
